DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's golf head coach
Jamie Green has announced the addition of three incoming student-athletes, who have signed their National Letters of Intent during the Fall Signing Period. Each of the incoming Blue Devils is ranked in the top 40 of the
Golfweek/Sagarin Boys Junior Rankings.
Cameron Martinez-Piedra (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity) – ranked No. 39 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin rankings,
Ian Siebers (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue) – ranked No. 22, and
Jimmy Zheng (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans) – ranked No. 5, will enroll at Duke University next year and compete for the Blue Devils.
"Cameron, Ian, and Jimmy are ideal student-athlete fits for Duke University," said Green. "They are each well accomplished in the classroom and can handle the rigor, while having high aspirations with their golf games. Their individual styles of play are actually quite different from each other – yet all can go low often, and at any time."
Martinez-Piedra, who was born in London but attended high school in Miami, is a four-time first-team All-Dade County selection from the
Miami Herald. He held a 70.8 scoring average as a senior at Palmer Trinity School. Martinez-Piedra has won Florida Junior Tour events in each of the last three years – 2017 at Falcon's Fire (70-66), 2018 at Stoneybrook (69-69) and 2019 at Crandon Park (70-79). He competed in the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur Match Play at Baltusrol GC and the 2019 Royal and Ancient (R&A) Boys Amateur Championship, also advancing to Match Play.
"Cameron is a terrific wind player and particularly sharp iron player having grown up playing in England and south Florida," said Green. "His vibrant personality and positive energy make him a perfect fit for our squad."
Siebers hails from Bellevue, Wash., where he was a four-time first-team All-Conference selection and led his team to the WIAA 3A state championship in 2019. One of the most accomplished junior players in the nation, Siebers was a second-team Rolex Junior All-American in 2018 and 2019 and the Pacific Northwest Junior Player of the Year in each of those years. Siebers won four junior tournaments, including the 2019 Junior America's Cup by three strokes (six-under 207), the 2018 AJGA Kyle Stanley (one-under 215), the 2018 AJGA Amino Vital (eight-under 208) – contested at Treyburn CC in Durham – and the 2018 Pacific Northwest Junior PGA. He played on the U.S. Junior President's Cup Team in 2019.
"Ian has established himself among the very best junior golfers in the United States and has shown he can compete in any part of the country and on a wide variety of courses doing it," said Green. "He drives it straight as an arrow and can putt like a wizard."
A native of Auckland, New Zealand, Zheng led his Macleans College team to back-to-back national championships in 2018 2019 in the New Zealand secondary school finals. He won the Ryan Moore Junior Championship at Oakbrook GC in 2018 (66-69-71=206), the 2018 South Island U-19 Championship in New Zealand (67-70-66=203) and fired a 63 to win the 2018 Auckland Anniversary Tournament. Zheng was named the 2019 Howick Local Board Sportsperson of the Year, the 2018 College Sport Youth Golfer of the Year and the Macleans Sportsperson of the Year.
"Jimmy's playing resume is quite global as he's represented New Zealand all over the world and played extremely well against strong fields," said Green. "He has plenty of length off the tee but has wonderful touch with green-side shots as well."Â
Duke, ranked No. 5 in the latest Bushnell/
Golfweek Coaches Top 25, returns to action March 1-2 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas.
