Sunday Rewind: A Look Back at the Wake Forest Game

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke football fell, 39-27, on Saturday night to Wake Forest but redshirt sophomore wide receiver Damond Philyaw-Johnson had a career game.
Despite the outcome, Duke had some positives come out of the game, including Philyaw-Johnson's two kickoff returns for a touchdown. Let's take a quick rewind to see how everything unfolded.
Both teams were faced with cold and rainy conditions on Saturday. The game marked Duke's first rain-soaked contest of the year.
Junior defensive end Victor Dimukeje added to his season sacks total when he dropped the Wake Forest quarterback twice in the game. That marked his 8.5 sack of the year, which is good enough for sole possession of fifth place on the season charts. He also improved his career sacks total to 14.0, which ties him with Vince Oghobaase for sixth all-time in program lore. The Baltimore, Md., native has now registered at least two-or more sacks in three games this season.
As mentioned earlier, Philyaw-Johnson made Duke history Saturday after he found paydirt twice on kickoff returns to become the first Blue Devil to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in a single game. He also was just the second player in ACC history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in a game (Justin Miller, Clemson vs. Florida State in 2004). His first one was Duke's first kickoff return for a score since Shaun Wilson (96 yards) did so at Notre Dame on Sept. 24, 2016. His two-touchdown mark tied the NCAA record for the most kickoff returns for a touchdown in a single game as well. Philyaw-Johnson's pair was the 25th occurrence in NCAA history.
Redshirt junior kicker AJ Reed continues to soar during his final campaign in the Duke Blue and White as he converted on two field goals throughout the contest (30- and 43-yards). Reed hit all three of his PATs in the game as well. The Prattville, Ala., native has now made 53 consecutive PATs, which currently puts him in sole possession of fifth place on Duke's career charts.
Redshirt senior quarterback Quentin Harris and junior tight end Noah Gray connected on a 17-yard catch-and-score on Duke's first play of the fourth quarter. That score was Gray's third touchdown the year. The Leominster, Mass., native registered seven catches in the game for 76 yards. His seven grabs are a career high, while his 76 yards were also a career best. Gray has now registered multiple receptions in each of Duke's 11 games this season and has posted five-or-more catches in six of those contests. Harris finished the game 14-of-23 for 163 yards and a touchdown.
Duke closes out the regular season when it hosts Miami on Saturday for an ACC contest. KickÂoff between the Blue Devils and Hurricanes is set for 3:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the ESPN2.
