Gorecki Scores 26, Duke Falls 64-57 to Virginia Tech

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke's Haley Gorecki registered a game-high 26 points, but the Blue Devil women's basketball team dropped a 64-57 decision to Virginia Tech Thursday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils fell to 11-13 overall and 3-9 in the ACC, while the Hokies improved to 16-8, 3-8. With the loss, it broke Duke's 24-game winning streak versus Virginia Tech.
Both teams struggled at the start with Duke's Gorecki scoring the first bucket of the game at 7:31 on the clock and the Blue Devil defense limited the Hokies without a basket until the 6:29 mark. Gorecki went on to score 10 of Duke's first 12 points and the Blue Devils led, 12-5, on back-to-back treys by the redshirt junior.
Virginia Tech came back and scored seven straight to even the score at 12-12 and the two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, 14-14. Gorecki (10) and junior Leaonna Odom (4) scored all of Duke's points.
The first 10 minutes were without a foul by both teams and Duke turned the ball over only one time.
Duke regained the lead, 20-16, but the Hokies came back with an 11-0 run to go ahead, 27-20, late in the second quarter. The Blue Devils hit three-pointers by freshman Miela Goodchild and Gorecki to close the first half trailing, 29-26.
Gorecki, who hails from Palatine, Ill, led all scorers in the first half with 13 points as she drained 3-of-4 treys, while adding four rebounds in 17 minutes. The Hokies outrebounded the Blue Devils, 21-15, in the first half.
Virginia Tech led the entire third quarter by as many as eight, before taking a 42-36 lead into the fourth. The Hokies held on in the fourth outscoring the Blue Devils, 22-21. Virginia Tech was led by Regan Magarity with 22 points and 18 rebounds.
Goodchild finished the game with 13 points, while hitting 2-of-5 from downtown.
It marked the 10th game this season Gorecki registered 20 or more points in a game. She added eight rebounds, one assist and one steal in 38 minutes.
The Blue Devils were outrebounded, 41-31, and both teams hit 37.9 percent from the field. Duke had only nine turnovers for the contest, which was a season low.
Duke will be off for the weekend before heading to Notre Dame Thursday, Feb. 24 for a 7 p.m., contest live on ACC Network Extra.
