CLEVELAND, Ohio – The sixth-ranked Duke fencing team finalized the 2019 campaign Sunday afternoon at the NCAA Fencing Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, with Duke's best team finish in program history.
The Blue Devils finished eighth as a team with 89 points, marking their ninth top-10 finish in the past 10 seasons.
Columbia claimed the team title with 178 points, followed by Penn State (166), Notre Dame (165), Harvard (150) and St. John's (127) to round out the top five.
Freshmen Alex Gorman and Zoe Superville highlighted the performances for the women Sunday as Gorman placed 14th and Superville in 15th. Gorman just missed All-America honors by two spots as she added 10 victories in saber over the two days of competition. Superville recorded nine victories in foil.
Julia Gianneschi and Lindsay Sapienza placed 19th in foil and saber, respectively. Gianneschi logged eight victories to Sapienza's nine. Competing for epee were Huda Aldadah and Maria Papadopoulos, who placed 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
