Need To Know
Team Two Against The Yellow Jackets...
Georgia Tech owns a 2-1 lead in the series … This is Duke's first trip to Atlanta to face the Yellow Jackets … After Duke took the series opener in eight innings last year in Durham, Georgia Tech captured the series win with victories in the final two contests of the weekend … Duke is 2-2 against teams from the state of Georgia.
Series Win No. 2 In The Bag...
Thanks to a pair of impressive showings on the offensive side, the Blue Devils took the weekend series against the Virginia Cavaliers, marking the second ACC series win of the year. It's the sixth series win in program history and third on the road. Virginia is the first program Duke has won two series against in history, sweeping the Cavaliers in Durham last year.
Carol With The Cannon...
Caroline Jacobsen showcased her cannon of a right arm in Sunday's run-rule win at Virginia and earned some time in the national spotlight because of it. The freshman caught a fly ball in right and launched a laser of a throw to third base, catching the runner tagging up at second to complete the double play. Jacobsen landed at No. 7 on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays, becoming the first player in school history to do so. Jacobsen's throw also caught the attention of MLB superstar right fielder Yasiel Puig of the Cincinnati Reds, who quote tweeted the video.
Foreman Turns In Career Day At UVA...
Jacobsen's highlight reel play wasn't the only impressive feat in Sunday's series-clinching win. Fellow rookie Kristina Foreman drove in five runs to spearhead Duke's offensive efforts, becoming the first player in program history to record five RBI in a single game. Foreman used a two-RBI double in the first to give Duke the lead and blasted a three-run home run later in the contest, her second bomb of the season, to complete her day.
PSA: Do. Not. Run. On. Jazz...
Redshirt sophomore Jazmine Moreno has been second to none behind the plate this season for the Blue Devils, throwing out a nation and ACC-leading 12 runners trying to steal. Three times this season, Moreno has recorded a pair of RTO's, all career highs. Most recently, No. 30 threw out a pair of runners in Duke's series-opening win against Pitt (March 15).
Go DJ, That's My DJ...
It's been a solid start to the career of Deja Davis, as the rookie infielder enters the week with a .289 batting average and a team-leading 33 hits and 17 stolen bases. Davis, who has hit safely in 12 of the last 14 games, put together a 4-for-4 showing against NC Central five weeks ago, just the second four-hit performance in program history. She joined teammate Rachel Abboud in the four-hit club, who went 4-for-4 against Boston College on March 17, 2018.
Davis has also been a stud on the base paths for Duke, going 17-for-17 in stolen bases, including a pair of 3-for-3 showings to set and then tie the school single-game record. Her 17 stolen bases surpass the program record of 16, set last year by Jameson Kavel.
Jameson Doubles Down...
One of the most consistent forces for the Blue Devil bats this year has been sophomore outfielder Jameson Kavel. Kavel, who owns a .284 average and leads the team with 23 runs scored, nine doubles and four triples, turned in her second 3-for-3 showing of the season in the series-clinching win at Virginia on Sunday.
It was a day of doubles for Kavel in Duke's extra-innings win against Kansas on March 2. The sophomore outfielder went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, with all three of her hits being for two bases. Her three doubles made her the first player in school history to record at least three in a game. Kavel put up her second multi-double contest of the year in Duke's matchup against Elon on March 6.
Bombs By Bri...
After the second weekend of ACC play, it's not just about success in the circle for Brianna Butler. Butler exited the third weekend of ACC play with a line of .500 BA/.833 SLG/.500 OBP in ACC games. She is top 10 in the conference in batting average (.500, 6th). Over the last 10 games, Butler has accumulated a scorching line of .500/.813/.529, tallying eight hits, two doubles, a home run and five RBI.
Defensive Excellence...
Earlier this season, Duke put together one of its best defensive stretches in program history, not committing an error in five-straight games from March 2 against Mississippi State to March 6 at Elon. The stretch of five-game stretch is a program record, besting the four-straight contests from last year set through the first four games in the Citrus Classic (Feb. 23-24) in Orlando, Fla.
For the year, the Blue Devils sport a .971 fielding percentage, which is tied for second in the conference and up 14 spots to 31st nationally.
Triple Trouble...
Through the first eight weeks of the season, the Blue Devils have established themselves as one of the top squads in the nation when it comes to tallying triples. Through 33 games, Duke has accumulated 14 triples, which stands second in the ACC and surpasses its 2018 total of nine. Duke's 0.44 triples per game average is second in the conference and up to eighth nationally.
Jameson Kavel leads the squad with four triples on the year, cementing her status as the master of getting extra bases so far this season (team-high 14 XBH). Kavel's four stand tied for second in the ACC and 12th nationally, while her 0.13 triples/game clip is third in the league and 32nd in the NCAA. She is just one triple away from tying the program single-season record, which she set last year with five.
Butler Settling In As Duke's Ace...
As the season rolls along, Brianna Butler has transformed into one of the top pitchers in the conference. With a team-best 6-2 record and 2.24 ERA, Butler has established herself as one of the top options in Duke's pitching arsenal, especially after dominant showings in the first three weekends of conference play. The righty tossed her second complete game of the season, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four, including getting two swinging in the seventh to close out Duke's first win against UNC in program history. She then threw a 9.0 inning complete game in the series-opening win against Pitt, while also adding a three-hit day at the plate with the first home run of her career. Her latest outing saw the righty allow just one hit and no runs in 4.0 innings of work in Duke's five-inning victory at Virginia (3/24) to clinch the series.
Butler reached a career-high 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings earlier this season. Even though the streak is over, Butler has still been impressive over Duke's last 10 games, going 3-1 with 17 strikeouts and a .262 opposing average in 40.1 innings of work. She currently stands top 10 in ACC play in wins (3, T4th) and ERA (2.10, 7th).
Got The Need, The Need For Speed...
The Blue Devils have been a terror on the base paths for opposing teams so far this year. Duke has 45 stolen bases, 24 more than where they stood through the first 33 games of last season. Earlier this year, the Blue Devils tallied six steals against NC Central, which set the program single-game record. That mark had been previously set the game before with five against Penn State on Feb. 17. After recording just one game of at least four steals last year, Duke has three so far this season.
Late Lead = Major Key...
Holding the lead late is a major key to success for Marissa Young's squad over the first two years of the program. This year, the Blue Devils are 10-1 when leading after five and 10-3 when taking the lead into the seventh. In their two years, Duke is 33-3 when leading after six innings.
On the flip side, Duke has struggled when trailing late, going 2-13 when down after five and 1-13 when losing through six. In their win in the series opener against Pitt, the Blue Devils picked up their first win in history when entering the seventh trailing (1-32). Duke's loss to Elon on March 6 was its first defeat when leading entering the seventh in program history.
Making Sacrifices...
For the second-straight season, the Blue Devils are one of the best in the ACC when it comes to dropping the sacrifice bunt. With 38 on the year, the squad leads the conference handedly, with the second team in the category tallying 22 this year (Notre Dame). Five Blue Devils stand in the top 10 of the ACC in sac bunts, with Jazmine Moreno leading the way with eight. She is also tops in the ACC and 20th nationally with 0.26 sacrifice bunts per game.
