DURHAM, N.C. – As the U.S. Women's Open gets set to commence Thursday at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., a total of seven Blue Devil women's golfers will compete May 30 through June 2.
Duke rising sophomore Gina Kim and incoming freshman Megan Furtney along with former Blue Devils Celine Boutier, Lindy Duncan, Yu Liu, Brittany Lang and Leona Maguire will hit the course this week.
The seven Blue Devils are the most by any school in Division I with Southern California second with six. UCLA and Arizona both have five competing.
A total of 156 golfers will start the field and the low 60 scorers and ties will advance to the weekend.
Lang, a two-time Duke All-America, won the 2016 U.S. Women's Open to become the Blue Devils' first major winner on the LPGA Tour.
Kim, coming off a rookie season where she helped lead Duke to a seventh NCAA Championship, will see action in her second U.S. Women's Open. A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim was a WGCA Second Team All-America and All-ACC selection as a freshman. She will tee off Thursday at 2:46 p.m., along with Jiyu Jung and Olafia Kristinsdottir.
“I am definitely very excited,” commented Kim. “I got to see how big of a tournament it is [last year] and how important it is to a lot of people and it is definitely important to me. I am looking forward to having a great time down there and hopefully learning a lot.”
An incoming freshman for the Blue Devils, Furtney is coming off winning her first USGA Championship last month at the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship along with fellow Duke signee Erica Shepherd. Furtney, who is from St. Charles, Ill., will be making her first appearance in the U.S. Women's Open. She will tee off Thursday at 2:57 p.m., along with Megan Osland and Megha Ganne.
"Obviously, I've never had the privilege to play in an event at such a high level before, and so just being able to be out here and take in every second has just been such an awesome experience so far, and the tournament hasn't actually started yet," added Furtney. "The first round is tomorrow and I've already learned so much about my game, and just kind of what it takes to get to this next level and be able to play this [event] every single year. Being out here is just super fun and I'm just trying to enjoy it all for the next couple of days."
Other tee times for the Blue Devils include Liu (7:11 a.m.), Boutier (8:39 a.m.), Duncan (12:45 p.m.), Maguire (1:29 p.m.), Lang (1:40 p.m.).
Fans can follow the action all week on national television beginning Thursday and Friday from 2:30-7:30 p.m. on FS1. Both Saturday and Sunday, the action will be aired on Fox from 2-7 p.m. More coverage will be available online at USGA.org as well.
