Duke's Furtney, Maguire Qualify for U.S. Open

DURHAM, N.C. – In U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifying Monday, Duke University incoming freshman Megan Furtney and 2018 Blue Devil graduate Leona Maguire each qualified for the 2019 U.S. Women's Open at different sites.

With rounds of 73 and 74, Furtney earned one of two slots in the U.S. Open Elgin Country Club in Elgin, Ill. Furtney, who hails from St. Charles, Ill., will make her first appearance in a major in a few weeks, after recently winning the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship along with fellow incoming freshman Erica Shepherd. Furtney's 36-hole ledger of 147 was boosted by seven birdies over the two rounds. She finished second behind Wichanee Meechai, who posted an even-par, 144.

Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland, turned in a 10-under-par, 134, and claimed one of two slots in the U.S. Open along with Yuka Saso, who posted an 11-under, 133, at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. Over the two rounds Monday, Maguire carded rounds of 66 and 68, while not committing a bogey on the day. It will mark Maguire's third appearance in the U.S. Open.

As of Monday, Duke will feature seven Blue Devils competing in the prestigious event – Celine Boutier, Lindy Duncan, Brittany Lang, Yu Liu, freshman Gina Kim, Maguire and Furtney.

The 2019 U.S. Women's Open will take place May 30 through June 2 at the Country Club of Charleston.
