DURHAM, N.C. – Duke shortstop Ethan Murray was named to the 2019 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
This is the first All-America honor for the Crozet, Va., native. Murray is the 12th Blue Devil in history to garner Freshman All-American honors, joining teammate Joey Loperfido, who collected the honor from Collegiate Baseball following last season in 2018. Murray is also the first Blue Devil to earn the honor from the NCBWA.
The ACC All-Freshman Team honoree recorded a standout freshman campaign as the team's everyday shortstop. The first-year Blue Devil started 58 contests across the season, leading the team in on-base percentage (.391), while ranking second in batting average (.305), RBI (40) and runs scored (48). The Duke infielder also tied for second on the team in hits with 61, while placing third in walks with 28.
Murray paced the team's offensive efforts in ACC play, batting a team-high .321 (34-106) across league play while adding 24 runs scored to rank first on the squad. The Duke shortstop ranked 20th overall in batting average in conference action, while placing seventh among freshmen.
The Freshman All-American team is voted upon by the membership of the NCBWA. The 2019 NCBWA National Freshman Player of the Year and National Freshman Pitcher of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 11.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. For more information about the NCBWA, visit the association's official Web site, www.ncbwa.com.
