Learning Through Language
By Jameson Kavel (Duke Softball) and Michaela Gordan (Stanford Women's Tennis) - #ACEinSouthAfrica
We were fortunate enough to receive a lesson in Xhosa during our first week from one of our community partners named Tsoarlo and had fun trying to pronounce the new words and phrases we learned. He emphasized how everyone in the community greets each other in passing and taught us how to carry on a conversation in Xhosa. Though we didn't quite master the clicks, we were excited to go back to the township and talk to the kids using the new phrases we had learned. More
Enriching Experiences
By Sarah Nelson (Duke Volleyball) and Hannah Howell (Stanford Softball) - #ACEinSouthAfrica
Every day the streets of the township are full of community members completing chores, playing with one another, and socializing. The kids we work with are not only loving but also display a strong sense of individual spirit and independence. They leave the house for the whole day and usually do not come home until dinner or bedtime. These kids get to be creative kids. More

One of our team mottos on this trip is, “Disconnect to connect.” We put our phones away and spend quality time together sharing stories and playing endless card games. More
