Former Blue Devil Twichell Qualifies for 2020 Olympics

YEOSU, South Korea – Ashley Twichell, a 2011 graduate of Duke, secured a trip to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo with a top-10 finish in the women's open water 10K event at the 18th FINA World Championships.
Twichell earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team for the first time in her career with her sixth-place finish in the event, finishing with a time of 1:54:50.5. She will be joined at the 2020 Olympic Games by fellow American Haley Anderson, who finished second in the event with a time of 1:54:48.1
The Blue Devil swimming and diving program will send representatives to the sport's premiere stage for the third consecutive Olympics. Abby Johnston was a finalist in women's three-meter springboard diving, competing for the United States, at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, where Duke head diving coach Nunzio Esposto also served as a member of the USA Diving coaching staff. Johnston captured a silver medal in women's three-meter synchronized diving and Nick McCrory took home bronze in men's 10-meter synchronized diving at the 2012 London Olympics. McCrory was also a platform finalist individually in London.
In addition, former Blue Devil swimmer Nancy Hogshead – a member of the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1994 – won three golds and a silver at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Twichell is also slated to compete in the women's 5K event, scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, July 16. She is eligible to race in the pool as well in South Korea, in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
