DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe announced Thursday the naming of Zach Baker, Edgar Cerenord, Quentin Harris, Tre Hornbuckle, Koby Quansah and Dylan Singleton as team captains for the 2019 season. The six returning lettermen were elected by their teammates.
Baker, a 6-4, 315-pound redshirt senior offensive guard from Green Cove Springs, Fla., has played in 33 career games and last season earned the program's Sonny Falcone Award, an honor presented annually for year-round commitment to strength training and conditioning. In 2018, Baker was a key member of an offensive front which helped Duke close the year as one of four ACC teams to compile 2,000-plus rushing and 3,100-plus passing yards.
Cerenord, a 6-1, 305-pound redshirt senior defensive tackle from Miami, Fla., has played 1,068 career snaps in 41 games with the Blue Devils, totaling 59 tackles. Last season, he played in just four games due to injury and was granted an extension of eligibility request by the NCAA last December for a sixth season of collegiate competition.
Harris, a 6-1, 195-pound redshirt senior quarterback from Wilton, Conn., enters the fall as Duke's starter under center. In 23 career games, he has completed 41-of-81 (.506) passes for 510 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception while rushing 78 times for 275 yards and seven additional scores. Last year, Harris was an Academic All-ACC selection after accounting for 12 total touchdowns as Duke went 8-5 with a win over Temple in the Walk-On's Independence Bowl.
Hornbuckle, 6-4, 260-pound senior defensive end from Murray, Ky., has seen action in 38 career games as a Blue Devil and compiled 94 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss and nine quarterback pressures. He and fellow end Victor Dimukeje combine to make Duke one of three ACC squads to have multiple players with 16.0 or more tackles for loss entering the 2019 season.
Quansah, a 6-1, 230-pound senior linebacker from Manchester, Conn., has 102 career tackles including 9.0 tackles for loss and two caused fumbles to his credit in 35 games at Duke. Off the field, he earned Academic All-ACC honors in 2017 and is a candidate for both the Wuerffel Trophy and AFCA Good Works Team.
Singleton, a 5-11, 190-pound senior safety from Dacula, Ga., was an honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2018 after totaling 73 tackles despite missing the final three games after suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Duke's win over North Carolina. In 35 career games at Duke, he has amassed 127 tackles with five double digit stop performances against Northern Illinois (10; 2017), Army West Point (11; 2018), Northwestern (10; 2018), Virginia Tech (10; 2018) and Virginia (10; 2018).
Duke opens the 2019 season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta on Saturday, August 31 against No. 2 Alabama. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., and the game will be televised by ABC.
