• In the season lid-lifter for both squads, Duke kicks off its 107th season of football by meeting No. 2 Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Saturday, August 31 ... Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
• In 2018, the Blue Devils went 8-5 overall and 3-5 in ACC play ... The season finished in Shreveport, La., as the Blue Devils earned their third straight bowl win with a 56-27 decision over Temple in the Walk-On's Independence Bowl.
• This season marks the 75th anniversary of Duke's 1944 squad which went 6-4, captured the Southern Conference championship, defeated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and closed the year ranked 11th in the final Associated Press poll ... Coached by Eddie Cameron, the Blue Devils started the year 1-4 before reeling off five straight wins over Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, South Carolina, North Carolina and Alabama.
• This year's season-opening game will mark the fifth on the gridiron between the two schools with Alabama leading the series, 3-1 ... To jumpstart the series, the Blue Devils captured a 29-26 victory in New Orleans in the Sugar Bowl as George Clark (14- 122 & 2 TDs) and Tom Davis (27-105 & 2 TDs) combined for 227 rushing yards and four ground TDs ... Alabama has won all three regular season matchups with victories in 1972 (35-12 in Birmingham), 2006 (30-14 in Tuscaloosa) and 2010 (62-13 in Durham).
• College Football Hall of Fame head coach Wallace Wade guided both the Alabama (1923-30) and Duke (1931-41 & 1946-50) gridiron programs ... With the Crimson Tide, Wade posted a 61-13-3 (.812) record with three national championships in 1925, 1926 & 1930 ... His tenure with the Blue Devils included a 110-36-7 (.742) ledger with six Southern Conference championships and Rose Bowl berths in 1938 and 1941 ... Duke's football stadium was renamed Wallace Wade Stadium in 1967, while a bronze statue of Wade was erected outside of Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2006 ... A native of Trenton, Tenn., Wade played football at Brown University, was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955 and following his coaching career served as the commissioner of the Southern Conference (1951-60).
• The Blue Devils are 28-141-6 all-time against nationally-ranked opponents (AP poll) including ledgers of 10-58-4 versus top-10 foes and 3-31-2 against top-5 competition.
• Under head coach David Cutcliffe, the Blue Devils are 9-2 in season-openers, including last year's 34-14 triumph over Army West Point ... Duke enters this week's Alabama game having won seven consecutive lid-lifters ... The Blue Devils have not won eight straight season openers since a 14-game run from 1932-45.
• Duke has won 23 of its last 26 (.885) games against non-ACC opponents.
• Elected by their teammates, six returning lettermen will serve as team captains for the 2019 campaign: OG Zach Baker, DT Edgar Cerenord, QB Quentin Harris, DE Tre Hornbuckle, LB Koby Quansah and S Dylan Singleton.
• Duke DEs Victor Dimukeje and Tre Hornbuckle have 16.5 and 16.0 career tackles for loss, respectively, to make Duke one of three ACC schools with multiple players with 16.0+ career TFL, joining Miami and Syracuse.
• Duke has made bowl game appearances in six of the past seven seasons ... The Blue Devils have won each of their past three bowl games with victories in the 2015 New Era Pinstripe, 2017 Quick Lane & 2018 Walk-On's Independence bowls.
• The Blue Devils have posted a team grade point average of 3.0+ in 21 consecutive semesters.
• This season, Duke will don a “McGEE” helmet sticker in memory of former Blue Devil lettermen, coaches and twin brothers Jerry and Mike McGee, who passed away on January 6, 2019 and August 16, 2019, respectively ... Jerry, who served as an assistant coach at Kansas State, Southern Illinois, East Carolina and Duke, led Edenton Holmes (N.C.) High School to a pair of state championships in 1964 and 1965 and is enshrined in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, National High School Hall of Fame and National Interscholastic Administrators Association Hall of Fame ... As a senior guard at Duke in 1959, Mike McGee earned first team All-America and ACC Player of the Year honors while claiming the Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman, went on to earn induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990 and later served as the head coach at his alma mater (1971-78) and then as Athletic Director at Cincinnati, Southern California and South Carolina.
