DURHAM, N.C. – Following a strong opening weekend that saw the Blue Devils start 2-0, head coach
Pam Bustin's squad heads to Evanston, Ill., to take part in the B1G/ACC Cup. Third-ranked Duke faces host Northwestern Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET before taking the turf again Sunday at 12 p.m. ET for a top-three battle with second-ranked Maryland.
The Blue Devils enter the second week of the season with two victories over ranked opponents on their resume. Duke kicked off the fall with wins over No. 9 Penn State and No. 25 William & Mary.

Duke opened B1G/ACC Cup play in high-scoring fashion last August, dispatching Northwestern by a 4-0 score at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex to move to 7-3 all-time against the Wildcats.

Margaux Paolino recorded two assists. Defensively, Duke limited the Wildcats to just four shots and one penalty corner on the afternoon.
Northwestern kicked off the 2019 season on the West Coast, going 2-1 in Palo Alto. The squad outlasted 21st-ranked Stanford in a shootout to start the 2019 campaign before falling to fourth-ranked UConn, 4-1, and shutting out California, 3-0.
Forward Bente Baekers claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors with three goals in the three contests. Her six points pace the team, while Maren Seidel has four points on two tallies.
Goalkeeper Florien Marcussen compiled a 2.10 goals against average and a .682 save percentage on opening weekend.

A back-and-forth top-five battle with Maryland saw the Blue Devils come up just short in a 4-3 loss at last year's B1G/ACC Cup. Duke surrendered its first loss in four years at the B1G/ACC Cup, splitting the weekend with the loss to the fourth-ranked Terrapins and a 4-0 shutout of 12th-ranked Northwestern. With the result, the Blue Devils moved to 12-34-3 all-time when facing Maryland.
Second-ranked Maryland earned its first shutout of the season Sunday, moving to 2-0 with a 5-0 home victory over New Hampshire. The Terrapins also defeated Richmond on opening weekend.
Maryland returned eight of the team's 11 starters from 2018, including Bodil Keus, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and Bibi Donraadt, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Donraadt leads the squad through two contests with seven points on two goals and three assists. In goal, Noelle Frost boasts a 0.61 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
Duke is 41-55-4 historically against Big Ten teams. The Blue Devils dispatched ninth-ranked Penn State, 4-1, in last Friday's season opener and will also face Iowa later this month.

The Blue Devils have gone unbeaten at the B1G/ACC three of the last four seasons. Last fall in College Park, Md, Duke shut out Northwestern, 4-0, before falling to host Maryland, 4-3. Boston College, Duke, Maryland and Northwestern head to Evanston, Ill., for this year's tournament. The event shifted to campus sites last fall after three years at the home of USA Field Hockey in Lancaster, Pa.

Wolgemuth Nabs ACC Player of the Week Nod

Jillian Wolgemuth was named the first ACC Defensive Player of the Week of the 2019 season after guiding third-ranked Duke to a 2-0 opening weekend.
After Duke surrendered a goal to ninth-ranked Penn State in the first five minutes of Friday's 4-1 season-opening victory, Wolgemuth and the defensive unit did not allow another tally for the rest of the weekend, logging 115 minutes without allowing a goal. The defense also notched its first shutout of the 2019 campaign Sunday at 25th-ranked William & Mary, helping to fuel a 4-0 road win. The Blue Devils did not allow a penalty corner in 60 minutes of action Sunday in Williamsburg, and held both opponents on the weekend to single-digit shot attempts.
Wolgemuth received the accolade for the second time in her career.
Miller Makes the Most of Duke Debut
Freshman forward
Hannah Miller impressed in her Duke debut last Friday night against ninth-ranked Penn State, putting away what would prove to be the game winner in the 28th minute. She capitalized on a quick drive up the field by the Blue Devils, finishing on an assist from
Leah Crouse for her first collegiate goal.

Jillian Wolgemuth, collected its first shutout of the season Sunday and allowed just one goal in 120 minutes of action last weekend.
Heading into the B1G/ACC Cup, the Blue Devils are tied for second in the ACC and rank fifth nationally with a 0.50 goals against average. The defense held both of last weekend's opponents to single-digit shot attempts and surrendered just three penalty corners in two contests.
Schleicher Named Duke Student-Athlete of the Week
Senior
Haley Schleicher was honored as the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week Wednesday after helping lead the Blue Devils to a pair of victories over ranked opponents on the opening weekend of the 2019 campaign.
A midfielder from Virginia Beach, Va., Schleicher tallied a career-best two goals Sunday in a 4-0 shutout of 25th-ranked William & Mary to close a 2-0 weekend for Duke. She scored off of a penalty corner opportunity in the second quarter, with fellow senior
Margaux Paolino providing the assist, and successfully converted a penalty stroke near the end of the third quarter.
Against Ranked Opponents
The Blue Devils are 47-22 against ranked foes since 2015 after going 13-6 against ranked opponents last fall.
