DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team swept Appalachian State 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21) Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated as they closed the 2019 Duke Invitational in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
"This weekend, we were really challenged and had to persevere," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "Today, we were able to come out and we were much smoother and cleaner. I hope our team is learning that we have a team we can make adjustments out on the court. We're fortunate in that the people who were given the opportunity have done a great job. It makes it easier on everyone."
The Blue Devils came out strong and hit .299 for the contest and limited the Mountaineers to a .106 clip.
Offensively, Duke was paced by junior
Payton Schwantz with 10 kills to hit .471 with just two hitting errors. Freshman
Gracie Johnson tallied her first career start in a Blue Devil jersey and accounted for nine kills and two blocks. Johnson wasn't the only freshman who saw a solid game as
Lizzie Fleming and
Camille Nazor had standout performances as well. Middle hitter Fleming added five kills, three digs and four blocks while setter Nazor dished a team-high 18 assists.
At the net along with Fleming was graduate student
Lauren Cline and sophomore
Lily Cooper who each tallied six blocks.
Duke game out hot in the first set as they hit .323 percent and Schwantz recorded half her total kills. Duke also added four of its seven service aces led by Schwantz (3) and
Sarah Nelson (2).
The Blue Devils continued to rack up kills with 16 in the second set for a .375 hitting percentage to the Mountaineers' .194.
Grace Morrison and Kara Spicer led Appalachian State with eight kills each.
Duke will hit the road Tuesday to take on UNCG for a 6:30 p.m., match in Greensboro, N.C.
