DURHAM, N.C. – Following another impressive season, head coach
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to now welcome the 2020 recruiting class. Right-handed pitcher and infielder
Nick Conte is a part of the talented group set to arrive in Durham next fall.
"Nick Conte is a player that we committed late in the process," said Pollard. "We saw him at East Coast Professional Showcase, and he has maybe one of the top breaking balls in the country. He's got an electric arm, and also plays the middle infield, so he can potentially fill a two-way player role for us. His fastball has been up to 95 miles an hour this fall. A lot of similarity to
Thomas Girard in terms of the size and the frame and the way he pitches, because he's got a real wipeout slider."
A four-year letterwinner at North Providence High School, Conte comes to Durham as a native of North Providence, R.I. Conte enjoyed an impressive junior campaign, helping the Cougars to a 13-5 record in their return to the Division II ranks. The right-hander competes for the L&M Baseball Club—a travel baseball program based out of southern New England.
This past summer, Conte pitched a no-hitter with the East Coast Pro Showcase's Boston Red Sox regional team during the Future Starz Tournament, before ending the summer with four strikeouts across 1.1 innings in the Summer Rivalry Classic against the New York Yankees Scouting Team.
Conte is a member of the National Honor Society, Italian Club and Math Club at North Providence, boasting a 4.025 GPA following his junior year.
Conte is regarded as a top-200 national prospect according to Perfect Game, being listed as the No. 56 right-handed pitcher in the country. Additionally, the organization lists Conte as the top-ranked prospect in the state of Rhode Island and the best right-handed pitcher in the state.
Conte is a part of Duke's 12-member 2020 recruiting class. GoDuke.com is set to release details on all 12 of the newest Blue Devils in the coming weeks.
