DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men's soccer team outshot No. 2 Wake Forest 18-8, but a free kick goal in the 85th minute for the Demon Deacons proved to be the difference in a 2-1 setback for the Blue Devils at Koskinen Stadium Friday evening.
Jack Doran had the goal for the Blue Devils, which outshot Wake Forest 13-5 in the second half.
The Blue Devils fall to 2-4 overall and 2-3 against ACC foes. Wake Forest moves to 5-1 and 3-1 in conference action. Omar Hernandez had the game winner for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest started the game on the front foot, moving the ball well and not allowing Duke to get into the game. The Blue Devils, however had the early looks at goal as senior
Daniel Wright had his effort deflected just wide of the right post.
On the ensuing corner kick, freshman center back
Antino Lopez made a run into the six-yard box and nearly headed home the service from Wright. However, the quick reflex stop from Andrew Pannenberg kept the game scoreless.
Just over five minutes later, Wake Forest grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a spectacular shot from Calvin Harris. Jake Swallen touched the ball to Harris on the left corner of the penalty box. The sophomore fired a right-footed shot and gave Duke goalkeeper
Will Pulisic no chance as it hit the upper 90 crossbar and post and bounced down and into the goal.
Wake Forest had the majority of possession for the remainder of the half, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
Duke turned the tables in the second half, coming out with higher intensity in search of an equalizer. The Blue Devils created chance after chance as Lopez had another header from a corner kick cleared off the line by the Wake Forest defender protecting the far post.
The Blue Devils had two more ensuing chances in the scrum in the box, but both were blocked. Duke continued to push the pace and nearly tied the game again in the 65th minute when
Scotty Taylor put a pass right on the doorstep wide right of the goal.
Wake Forest regrouped and put Duke on the defensive for the next few minutes as Pulisic made a pair of crucial stops to keep it a 1-0 game. He finished the night with three stops.
Finally, in the 71st minute and arguably against the run of play, the Blue Devils equalized.
Lewis McGarvey got the ball at his feet 35 yards from goal and passed it to
Ian Murphy on the left side. The junior defender made a one-touch pass to
Nick Pariano, who laid it off to Doran making the through run for a one-on-one with Pannenberg. The goal was the third for Doran this season.
Looking like the Blue Devils might head into overtime for the third time this season, Wake Forest earned a free kick on the right corner of the penalty area. Hernandez stepped up and fired a perfectly struck ball into the left upper 90 for the 2-1 advantage.
Duke had two more looks in the final two minutes, but both shots were just off target as Wake Forest picked up the three road points.
The Blue Devils close out their regular season home slate with a non-conference match against Kentucky Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
