Behind four players with double-digit kills, the 14th-ranked Duke volleyball team bounced back from Saturday's loss with a 3-1 victory (25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17) Sunday evening against Virginia Tech in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
For the second match in a row, Duke featured four Blue Devils with double-digit kills as junior
Ade Owokoniran amassed a whopping 18 with just four errors to hit .359 for the match. Senior
Payton Schwantz (13),
Lily Cooper (10) and
Gracie Johnson (10) round out the double-digit Blue Devils as Duke hit .213 overall.
Schwantz hit .258 percent and Cooper played to a .286 clip with her second straight match with 10 or more kills. Sophomore
Lizzie Fleming also had a solid evening with seven kills and just two errors to hit .263.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Duke holds a dominating 55-13 overall series record against Virginia and is riding a seven-match win streak against the Cavaliers heading into Friday.
The two met previously this season on October 2 in Charlottesville as Duke came away with a 3-0 sweep. The second contest of the weekend between the two schools was previously scheduled for October 3, but was postponed due to a lack of available players for the Cavaliers.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
The Cavaliers enter the weekend 1-5 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Their lone victory this season came to non-conference foe The Citadel on September 18.
Last weekend, Virginia fell to NC State 3-1 in both weekend matches in Charlottesville.
Virginia is hitting .171 percent as a team and is led by Sarah Billiard with 58 kills, followed by Grace Turner (57) and Jayna Francis (50).
AMONG THE TOP IN THE ACC
Duke enters the weekend in the top five of ACC statistics in eight different categories: opponent hitting percentage (1st), opponent assists (3rd), opponent kills (2nd), blocks (5th), opponent blocks (5th), service aces (4th), opponent service aces (4th) and digs (2nd).
The Blue Devils have racked up 474 total digs so far this fall for a 16.34 dig/set average and have accumulated 41 service aces (1.41 ace/set). Duke once led the nation in blocks per set and is now fifth in the conference with 73.0 total team blocks and 2.52 blocks/set.
WELCOME TO BLOCKTOBER
Duke's block has been outstanding this fall season with 73.0 total team blocks (2.52 blocks/set). The Blue Devils' best middle blockers from the 2019 season have already made an impact as
Lily Cooper and
Lizzie Fleming combine for 63 blocks and nine solo.
Fleming is sixth in the conference with 34, (1.17 blocks/set) followed by rookie
Georgia Stavrinides in 10th with 19 (1.12). Cooper (29, 1.00),
Ade Owokoniran (21, 0.72) and
Gracie Johnson (15, 0.52) round out Duke's ACC blocking presence.

Duke has featured five players with 50+ kills in seven contests as senior
Payton Schwantz leads the team with 81 and a .274 hitting percentage. Junior
Ade Owokoniran checks in with 78, followed by sophomore
Gracie Johnson with 71, junior

Lizzie Fleming with 50.
Duke has hit .211 this season and has limited its opponents to a .159 clip.
