Brinker Opens with Even-Par, 72, at Carolina Amateur

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With an even-par, 72, in round one of the Golfweek Carolina Country Club on Sunday, Duke University freshman Phoebe Brinker opened in a tie for second overall and only three shots off the lead with 36 holes remaining at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.

Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., featured an excellent start to the day with four birdies over her first seven holes and was at four-under-par. She went on to bogey four straight holes to drop back to even par. After a birdie on No. 13, Brinker had two pars and then suffered a double-bogey on No. 16, before closing the day with a par on 17 and birdie on No. 18 to finish with a 72.

Riley Smyth leads the action with a three-under-par, 69.
