DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's golf coach
Jamie Green announced the final member of the program's 2021 incoming freshman class with the signing of
Luke Sample, the nation's No. 23 junior, to a National Letter of Intent.
With the New York City native Sample, each of Duke's three signees in this class are ranked in the AJGA top 100, including two in the top 25.
Kelly Chinn is ranked No. 1 and
John Peters is No. 86. The
Golfweek rankings, in which Chinn is No. 1, Sample checks in at No. 14.
"The folks in the New York metropolitan area are well aware of just how good a golfer Luke is," said Green. "The collegiate world is about to find out. Luke very well might be the model of what we look for in a recruit to Duke University: as inquisitive as he is smart; as eager as he is confident; as optimistic as he is mature; and as athletic as he is technically skilled. His parents, Joanne and James, are clearly enthusiastic and energetic about their sons' passions and those traits show up in Luke's personality, as well."
A highly-accomplished tournament player, Sample was named the 2020 Metropolitan Golf Association Junior Player of the Year following a record-setting season in which the 17-year-old became the first player in history to win both the Met Junior Championship and Met Open Championship in the same season.
"As if winning AJGA tournaments and the state junior championship weren't enough, Luke's run in the Metropolitan Golf Association's events WAS nothing short of astounding in 2020." Said Green. "I really doubt that even enthusiasts in 'the know' about junior and amateur golf realize just how good you have to be to win the Met Junior, finish runner-up in the Met Amateur, and win the Met Open — in one summer. That's ridiculously good!"
In becoming just the eighth amateur all-time, and the youngest player in history, to win the Met Open – a pro event, Sample carded three consecutive rounds in the 60s (69-68-68) to finish three strokes clear of the field at eight-under par. He rallied for a stretch of six birdies in seven holes to seize control of the tournament, after entering the final round two off the lead.
His 2020 schedule also included tournament wins at the AJGA KJ Choi Foundation (71-71-70) and the AJGA Junior at Penn State (66-70-63). In 2019, he claimed tournament wins at the New York State Boys Amateur Championship (65-75), the IMG Junior Golf Tour at Charleston Springs CC (67-66) and the AJGA Junior All Star at Windsor (69-72).
"We are excited to have Luke, John and Kelly, and I believe Duke's golf program has just signed one of its very best classes," said Green.
Sample attended Trevor Day School in Manhattan and was a 2020 second-team AJGA Junior All-America selection.
