DURHAM, N.C. – Duke softball is set to close out its fall season with the first annual Black versus Blue World Series at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The three-game series begins on Friday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. Game two on Saturday, Nov. 7 will start at 4 p.m. while first pitch of the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Due to Duke's COVID-19 guidelines, fans will not be permitted to attend this weekend's series.
Head coach
Marissa Young's 2020 squad was having its best start in program history, putting together an impressive 23-4 overall record before the spring season was shorted due to the pandemic.
"There was a genuine concern and desire to work hard and get back to where they left off," Young said about the team in quarantine. "They realigned their priorities and I saw them come back as a more mature group that was hungry and had a different perspective which allowed us to excel quickly once they got back onto campus."
Duke adds six freshmen to its 2021 roster that includes 19 returners from last year's team. The upperclassmen have taken the newcomers under their wings and sped up the learning curve associated with collegiate softball – both on the field and academically.
Over the course of fall practices, Young noted three areas of growth. From working on situational defense, each pitcher adding a new pitch and players settling in at the plate, there has been tremendous growth in all parts of the game.
Leading up to the series, teams were created for each intrasquad scrimmage and changed the following game. For the first time this fall, players will be on the same team for the entirety of the three-game series, learning how to work together and respond following losses.
Captains were selected at random out of a hat and both names drawn were freshmen –
Sarah Goddard (Black) and
Francesca Frelick (Blue). Building a roster, each captain chose a teammate, and the same position player would automatically go to the opposing team and so on.
The two teams will be coached by assistant coaches
Josh Bloomer (Blue) and
Jessica Bracamonte (Black) while Young will call pitches for both sides.
