DURHAM, N.C. – Duke softball began its first annual Blue vs. Black Fall World Series as the Blue Team notched a 9-5 victory to take the first game of the series on Friday evening at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spring sports aren't permitted to play fall competition, so the World Series is the most game-like scenario the Blue Devils have had in 241 days.
The Blue Devils' offense picked up right where it left off as senior
Jameson Kavel sent a leadoff home run over the wall in left center to give Blue an early 1-0 lead. Senior
Sydney Bolan doubled to right field and graduate student
Dominique Salinas scored on an overthrow to third base (2-0).
Black came back firing in the bottom of the inning as junior
Deja Davis blasted her own leadoff homer. Freshman
Claire Davidson beat out a throw at first and junior
Caroline Jacobsen smacked a ball against the left field wall for a double to put two on base. A two-run triple by junior
Kristina Foreman gave Black its first lead of the game at 3-2 before a double play ended the frame.
Blue used two hits and capitalized on a couple of errors to rack up six runs in the top of the second. Sophomore
Gisele Tapia and Salinas both reached on a fielder's choice while Bolan was intentionally walked. Sophomore
Kamryn Jackson dropped a ball in shallow center field to drive home a run before freshman
Julia Boyet sent a two-run double to right center, expanding her team's lead to 8-3.
Following three scoreless frames, Salinas looked to spark the offense in the top of the sixth as the Texas native doubled off the left field wall. Jackson crushed a ball down the right field line, scoring Salinas before getting tagged out at second to end the inning (9-3).
The Black Team saw two hits in the bottom of the sixth as Davidson sent a ball through the left side and Foreman hit an RBI single to center, cutting Blue's lead 9-4. Following a quick top half, freshman
Sarah Goddard singled to left field, keeping the game alive with two outs. Junior
Kyla Morris beat out a throw at first, putting two runners on for Davis who sent a blooper down the left field line, scoring Goddard (9-5) for the final run of the contest.
Senior pitcher
Peyton St. George earned the win in the circle, hurling five frames in which she notched one strikeout while junior
Kylie Coffelt pitched an inning in relief. Junior
Shelby Walters pitched four innings in the loss with one strikeout before Davidson took over, throwing 2.1 frames with three strikeouts. Freshman
Lillie Walker made an appearance, facing two batters and garnering one punchout.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow for game two at 4 p.m. at the Duke Softball Stadium.
