DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's lacrosse coach
Kerstin Kimel announced Wednesday that redshirt junior
Sam DeBellis has transitioned into a student assistant coach role with the team for the 2020 season.
"I am so proud to announce that
Sam DeBellis will officially join our coaching staff as a Student Coach," Kimel said. "Our team stands to benefit tremendously with Sam on our sideline in an official capacity. Despite the adversity that she has endured during the last three years, she has always been the consummate teammate and leader for our team."
DeBellis appeared in one game for Duke, a 20-5 victory over Furman in the second game of the 2017 season, before suffering an injury that sidelined her for the remainder of the season. In the game against the Paladins, the Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., native scored on a free position shot, her only shot of the game. She also added two ground balls.
The next two seasons, 2018 and 2019, continued to be injury-ridden for the attacker. She stayed on the sidelines but continued to support her team throughout. DeBellis also excelled in the classroom, earning ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition for three consecutive years.
"Sam is positive, selfless, hard-working, demonstrates care above and beyond for her teammates, and is highly respected by her peers," Kimel continued. "As a player, Sam's game sense, IQ and field vision are her greatest strengths and she will be able to continue to impart her knowledge and wisdom on her teammates just as she has done throughout her career."
Duke is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when the Wofford Terriers come to Koskinen Stadium to close out the Blue Devils' three-game home run to start the year. Opening draw is set for 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
