PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Duke women's basketball team continued its solid play Thursday as the Blue Devils went on the road and collected a 73-56 victory over Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. It marked the seventh win out of the last nine contests for the Blue Devils.
Senior
Leaonna Odom led Duke with a game-high 20 points, while graduate
Haley Gorecki added another all-around great game with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Junior
Jade Williams scored double-digits for the third straight contest as she finished with 10.
The Blue Devils (14-10, 8-5 ACC) got off to a hot start and held as big as a 16-point lead, 22-6, early in the first quarter, before the Panthers closed the quarter on a 6-0 run. Gorecki, who hails from Palatine, Ill., did not miss a shot as she hit 4-of-4 field goals and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to finish with 12 points to lead the way.
Duke hit 61.5 percent from the field in the first and had six assists on eight buckets.
In the second quarter, Pitt outscored the Blue Devils 18-16 and Duke hit only one of its final seven field goals and Duke led 38-30 at halftime. After scoring 12 first quarter points, Gorecki was held scoreless, but three Blue Devils drained three-pointers in the second –
Miela Goodchild,
Kyra Lambert and
Mikayla Boykin.
Duke passed the ball well in the first half registering 12 assists on 14 baskets and had only six turnovers, while forcing 14 Pitt turnovers.
Odom came out strong in the third and scored 10 of Duke's 21 points as the Blue Devils outscored the Panthers, 21-7. Duke featured an 11-0 run late in the third as the Blue Devils held Pitt to 3-of-14 field goals.
The Blue Devils emptied the bench for most of the fourth period giving much needed rest for the starters. Pitt went on an 11-0 run late, before freshman
Azana Baines scored for the first time on the evening.
Pittsburgh (4-20, 1-12) was led by Rita Igbokwe with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Boykin finished the contest with seven points and six assists, while Goodchild added six points on two three-pointers.
Onome Akinbode-James pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and took her team-leading seventh charge of the season. Duke dished a season-high 22 assists on the night.
Duke will return home to Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday, Feb. 16 as the Blue Devils host 14
th-ranked Florida State at 1 p.m. It will mark Duke's annual Play 4 Kay game and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive free pink t-shirts.
