CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke track & field team opened the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C., Friday with a multitude of strong performances that included three top-five marks in program history.
One of the top highlights for the Blue Devils came in the men's distance medley relay, where they took first place with a time of 9:51.86. The time ties Duke with Pittsburgh for the fourth-fastest in the ACC this indoor season. Senior
Matt Wisner led off the DMR with a 2:58.8 1200m split, giving the Blue Devils an early lead that they would never relinquish. Freshman
Connor Atkinson followed with a 400m second-leg time of 49.3, before sophomore
Matt Politis clocked a 1:54.4 in his first 800m attempt since high school. Junior
Alex Miley finished with a 4:09.06 1600m to wrap up the win for Duke.
In the women's long jump, junior
Erin Marsh set a new personal record mark of 5.94m, which is good for fifth all-time at Duke. Freshman
Ezra Mellinger recorded a 7.15m on the men's side.
Senior
Brittany Aveni also had a record performance on Friday with a 53.69 time in the women's 400m. The mark ranks fourth in program history in the event and qualifies Aveni for the ACC Indoor Championships. Freshman
Jenna Crean also ran a seasonal best in the event with a time of 56.75.
Three Duke runners set personal-best times in the women's mile. Senior
Lindsay Billings clocked a 4:54.96 – which placed eighth in the event – while freshmen
Samantha Schadler and
Emily Cole recorded times of 4:55.29 and 5:01.80, respectively.
In the men's mile, freshman
Rory Cavan placed third with a personal-best finish at 4:13.18. Fellow newcomer
Joseph Laster III also had an impressive showing, clocking a 6.90 in the men's 60m, which ties him for the fifth-fastest mark at Duke.
Duke returns to competition on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., when three Blue Devils will take part in both the women's high jump and men's pole vault.
