ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Duke women's lacrosse team's second half comeback versus No. 15 Navy came up just short Sunday afternoon as the Blue Devils fell, 16-15, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Duke's game-tying shot by
Katie Cronin as time expired went wide left ending any hope of forcing overtime.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the opening minutes before Navy (2-1) scored three to take a 5-3 lead.
Catriona Barry and
Caroline DeBellis responded with scores to bring the game level at, 5-5. Unfortunately, the Midshipmen used an 8-1 rally over the final 9:25 of the half to take a 13-6 edge into the break.
Navy added one more to open the second period before Duke (2-2) strung together seven straight scores over 14:06 to pull within one, 14-13. Barry (twice), DeBellis (twice),
Olivia Carner,
Abby Landry and
Lindsey Reynolds all registered scores for the Blue Devils.
Navy extended its lead to 16-13 late in the contest but Duke responded with two quick goal within 20 seconds to make it a one score game with 30 ticks remaining. Barry scored a free position shot and then assisted on a cutting Landry for her second tally of the game.
Navy won the ensuing draw but
Olivia Carner caused a turnover to give Duke a chance at a tie. After a timeout by head coach
Kerstin Kimel,
Katie Cronin traveled over half the field and got a shot off that went just wide as the clock expired.
Chase Henriquez substituted into goal at the half for Duke and had a stellar showing. She and the Blue Devil defense held strong against their nationally ranked foe and allowed Duke to make that 7-0 run to get them back in the contest. Navy won six consecutive draw controls during Duke's 7-0 run but Henriquez finished with four saves, while only giving up three goals in the second half on 10 shots.
Barry, a junior from Napa, Calif., led Duke with five points on four goals and an assist and has scored four goals in three consecutive games. Jenner led the Blue Devils in the circle with 11 controls.
The Midshipmen were led by Kelly Larkin on five goals and three assists.
The Blue Devils return home on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they host George Washington. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
