CHICAGO – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team defeated sixth-ranked Pepperdine, 4-1, Friday afternoon in round of 16 action at the 2020 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 6-1 overall as the Waves suffer their first loss of the season (2-1).
"This was a huge match for us," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "I told them after the match that it was by far the best match we've played. We really had the willingness, desire and energy to compete the whole time. Getting the doubles point was big … we made some changes to our lineup and I thought we played great doubles at 1. Our team at two got down 0-3 but changed the way they played. We got down early in singles but never gave up and fought our way back to give ourselves a chance."
After dropping the doubles point the last two matches, Duke came from behind the secure the first point of the match.
Rookie
Chloe Beck and junior
Kelly Chen dominated on Duke's first court with a swift 6-1 victory over Pepperdine's Jessica Failla and Ashley Lahey. The Waves evened doubles with a 6-3 court three win as Lisa Zaar and Daria Kuczer defeated
Summer Dvorak and
Yasmine Mansouri, forcing the doubles decision on court two. Despite trailing 0-3,
Meible Chi and
Margaryta Bilokin overcame the deficit and defeated Anastasia Iamachkine and Astrid Olsen, 6-4, to give the Blue Devils the lead heading into singles.
Duke carried its momentum into singles action as Bilokin collected the second point for the Blue Devils. Tabbed No. 74 by the ITA, Bilokin upset No. 36 Iamachkine (6-3, 6-4) on Duke's third court.
Pepperdine answered with its first and what would become the only point of the contest with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) score as Failla defeated Mansouri on court two.
The Blue Devils took control of the match and secured the final two courts to send them to the quarterfinals.
Ranked No. 89 in the latest ITA rankings, Chi defeated Olsen (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) in a three-set thriller on court four, minutes before freshman Beck clinched the match for the Blue Devils. On court five, No. 17 Beck defeated No. 124 Zaar (1-6, 6-2, 6-4) to remain undefeated this season.
Despite being unfinished, No. 10 Chen was up in the third set over the nation's top ranked player, Lahey (3-6, 6-3, 5-3).
"There isn't a lot that separates any team here," Ashworth said. "These teams are all proven winners. They've all won matches to get here. Every team here has a great history and the only thing that separates each team is having the willingness and determination to hit another ball. Our team is in a good spot, but our team has to do the little intangible things well. Our team really believes there isn't a lot that separates us from anyone else."
The Blue Devils will take on No. 3 Georgia Saturday in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2019 NCAA semifinals. Georgia defeated No. 11 Virginia, 4-2, earlier in the round of 16.
