DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's basketball team started strong on the road Sunday at Miami and went on to cruise to a 74-55 victory over the Hurricanes at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The Blue Devils collected their sixth win over the last eight games and second straight road tally.
Duke improved to 13-10, 7-5 in the ACC, while Miami dropped to 12-11, 4-8.
Graduate Haley Gorecki registered another outstanding all-around game notching her second straight double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in 39 minutes. Redshirt freshman Mikayla Boykin tied a career high with 15 points, while junior Jade Williams added a season-high 16 points as five different Blue Devils reached double-digit scoring.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a great start leading by as many as 10, before holding a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Duke hit 57.1 percent from the field and was paced by eight points from Williams and seven from Gorecki, which all came during a 9-0 run for the Blue Devils.
Miami's defense came out and locked the Blue Devils down in the second quarter holding Duke without a field goal until the 6:35 mark, when sophomore Onome Akinbode-James drained a jumper at the top of the key. The Hurricanes had cut the Duke lead to three, 21-18, but Akinbode-James' jumper ignited the Blue Devils on a 10-2 run to take a 31-20 lead.
Duke closed the first half on an 8-0 run that was capped on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Williams. The Blue Devils hit 55.6 percent from the field and 6-of-11 from downtown, while their 43 points was the second-most in ACC play by Duke in 2019-20.
A product of The Colony, Texas, Williams finished the first stanza with a team-best 12 points, which also tied a season high. She hit 5-of-6 field goals, had two blocks and one rebound in 18 minutes. Gorecki added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Boykin came off the bench in the first half and was very effective with eight points, five assists and two rebounds in 10 minutes.
Miami came out in the third period and drained its first two shots and went on a 5-0 run forcing Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie to call timeout. The Hurricanes inched their way back into the game cutting the Blue Devil lead to, 46-42, but Duke closed the third strong on an 11-1 run to lead 57-43. Miami did not score over the final 3:32 of the third.
The Blue Devils outscored the Hurricanes, 17-12, in the fourth period to push Duke to the win.
For the game, Duke hit 49.1 percent from the field and limited the Hurricanes to 34.5 percent shooting. The Blue Devils dished 21 assists and held a 37-32 advantage on the boards. Five different Duke student-athletes drained a three-pointer on the day.
Senior Leaonna Odom chipped in 11 second half points for the Blue Devils, while graduate Kyra Lambert had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Miami was led by Mykea Gray with 27 points.
Duke will close a two-game road swing at Pittsburgh Thursday, Feb. 13 with a 6 p.m., tip live on ACC Network.
