Four Players Net First Career Goals

DURHAM, N.C.—Fourteen different Blue Devils scored at least a goal, lifting No. 13 Duke to a 19-6 victory over Furman in Sunday afternoon men's lacrosse action at Koskinen Stadium. It was the first career goal for four of the goal scorers, including seniors JT Giles-Harris and Blake Leischow.

Dyson Williams led the way with four goals and JP Basile dished out a game-high three assists. Senior Joey Manown had two goals and an assist and senior Reilly Walsh distributed two helpers. In addition to Giles-Harris and Leischow, freshmen Connor Drake and Jake Caputo also netted their first career goals.

"The coaching staff was really proud of the players in that we wanted to simulate what it might be like to play in an ACC Tournament and play two games in three days," said head coach John Danowski. "I think for 60 minutes the guys played right and played the Duke way so to speak."

Duke (4-2) jumped out to a 7-0 leads after 17:14, getting goals from seven different players. Senior defensive midfielder started the scoring two minutes in, running the length of the field to post his first goal since his freshman campaign in 2017.

"It's really important [to see the balance in scoring we have]," Danowski said. "It shows the guys are playing the right way, making the extra pass, looking for each other, sharing the ball. Somewhere down the line that will play dividends in terms of getting confidence in each other."

Defensively, the Blue Devils were excellent in throughout the game and especially in the first half as Furman (1-4) managed just 10 shots and one goal in the opening 30 minutes. Anders Erickson scored the first of his two on the day at 6:25 of the second period before Duke answered with three more to end the opening half with a 10-1 lead.

Duke's Giles-Harris finished his day with a goal, three ground balls and a caused turnover, while Kenny Brower had two ground balls. The Blue Devils held Furman to droughts of 23:35 and 10:59 in the game. Three of Furman's six goals came in the final quarter.

In the third quarter, the Blue Devils outscored the Paladins 7-2, bumping the lead to 14. Williams had two in that stretch, while Leischow, Giles-Harris and Caputo turned defense into offense to put themselves on the scoresheet. Sophomore Braden Burke provided the pass to Caputo, notching his first career point. Cameron Mulé and Ryan Hastings
tacked on two more goals in the final 15 minutes to give Duke win No. 4 on the season.

Joe Stein and Jordan Ginder both won seven faceoffs apiece, while Trey Bender went 4-of-4 at the X and picked up his first career ground ball. Ginder had six ground balls and Stein four. In goal, Andrew Bonafede earned his first career start and made five saves. Garrett Smith had one save in the final 15 minutes.

Alec Van de Bovenkamp had 11 saves in three quarters, while Andrew Jenet had four. Duke outshot Furman 50-26 for the game and won the ground ball battle 35-22.

Duke has a busy next week as it travels to Loyola to play the No. 12 Greyhounds March 7. The Blue Devils host Jacksonville March 10 and travel to Towson March 14.
