DURHAM, N.C.—Former Duke men's soccer player Jeremy Ebobisse will don the U.S. crest again as one of 20 players picked by U.S. U20 head coach Jason Kreis for the 2020 Concacaf Olympic Men's Qualifying Championship, to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, March 20-April 1.
Ebobisse is among 11 players on the 20-man roster who have been capped at the senior international level. The Bethesda, Md., native earned his first cap for the U.S. Men's National Team, starting and playing 66 minutes in a 3-0 win against Panama Jan. 28, 2019. He also was called in for the national team camp this past November.
He was a member of the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team that won the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship, which in turn booked a qualifying spot for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea Republic. Ebobisse tallied two goals in three appearances (1 start) for the United States in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, including scoring in a 2-1 loss to Venezuela in the quarterfinals on June 4, 2017.
A striker for the Portland Timbers in MLS, Ebobisse recently signed a multi-year contract extension. In his third season with the Timbers in 2019, Ebobisse tied for first on the team with 11 goals and was the only player on the roster to appear in all 34 league games. Most notably, Ebobisse was one of three players in MLS age 22 or younger with 11 or more goals scored in league play last year. He has tallied 17 goals and nine assists in 72 appearances across all competition.
At Duke, he was a two-year starter at striker and played in 38 games with 30 starts. He finished his collegiate career with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points and was taken fourth overall by the Portland Timbers in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
The squad includes 15 players on MLS teams and five who are foreign-based. Teams are not required to release players for age-group competitions. In addition, Concacaf qualifying begins and ends outside the March FIFA window.
The two top teams in Concacaf -- the two semifinal winners -- will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
