Duke football play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable football moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.
Â
"In his first 10 years in Durham, David Cutcliffe had made a habit of bucking tradition. So, it shouldn't have been too startling to see the 'Battle for the Victory Bell' taking place earlier than normal during the 2017 season – in September to be precise, a first for the historic rivalry game. One would have to go all the way back to 1925 to find a time when Duke and North Carolina got together even as early as October 10th – but never in September.Â
Â
"Duke entered the game 3-0 for just the second time in the Cutcliffe era, including impressive non-conference wins over Northwestern and Baylor, but found itself trailing 17-13 entering the fourth quarter.
Â
"During that final period, quarterback Daniel Jones would lead an eight play, 74-yard drive, capped by Shaun Wilson's 1-yard rushing score to give the Blue Devils a 20-17 lead with just over six minutes remaining.
Â
"On the ensuing drive by Carolina, Bryon Fields Jr. would cement his place in Blue Devil lore with a game-saving play. Facing 3rd-and-12 at the Duke 44-yard line, Carolina quarterback Chazz Surratt found himself under heavy pressure and tried a two-handed overhead pass up the middle of the field, a desperation heave that found the waiting arms of the senior cornerback. Sixty-one yards later Fields had his second pick-6 of the season, and the fourth of his career – still the most in program history.
Â
"In sealing the 27-17 win, Fields' pick-6 also guaranteed Cutcliffe his 100th career victory and marked Duke's 500th as a program – but most importantly it ensured that the Victory Bell could be heard on West Campus for yet another season."
