The 15
th-ranked Blue Devils prevailed over the Louisville Cardinals in a tough matchup at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium after a crazy weekend of events.
Duke was slated to play Louisville on Saturday, March 9 and followed its normal travel routine and traveled to Louisville the night before. Both teams warmed up, but 10 minutes into the game the weather became an issue. Ultimately, the game was postponed to the next day, leaving the Blue Devils scrambling to make hotel accommodations for the night. After a frantic night, the teams took the field on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Blue Devils showed resilience in a close, back and forth battle with the Cardinals. Neither team led by more than two goals, alternating leads. Duke went up two, to lead 3-1 in the first five minutes of the game. Louisville responded, scoring four straight with 13 minutes remaining in the half.
When the halftime buzzer rang, the Blue Devils trailed the Cardinals 6-5. The visitors opened the second half strong, putting together a three-goal run, including
Olivia Jenner's second goal on the day. Again, the Cardinals wouldn't go away and scored a pair to tie it 8-8 with 7 minutes remaining in the game.
Duke scored once before Louisville scored twice to give the hosts a one goal lead with just under two minutes on the clock. The Blue Devils showed their resilience, scoring with 58 seconds remaining to tie. As the final buzzer sounded, head coach
Kerstin Kimel's squad found themselves in a familiar position as its previous ACC game – overtime.
"While having a bit of deja vu from our Virginia Tech game, I remember feeling confident and prepared going into OT," defender
Charlotte Tucci said. "We had been in the same situation just a few games before, so we knew we could do it."
The first overtime period was scoreless for both teams. The Duke defense performed well throughout the whole contest, led by
Gabbe Cadoux's career-high 12 saves and Tucci and
Callie Humphrey recording three and two caused turnovers, respectively.
After holding strong on through the first period of overtime, Duke sealed the game with 4:37 remaining in the second overtime period.
"The Louisville game was definitely one of the most exciting games of my career," Tucci said reflecting on her senior year. "After playing the first 10 minutes of the game on Saturday, sitting through hours of a weather delay, and then finishing the game on Sunday, there was no better way to win than in double overtime."
Jenner finished the game with a season-high 14 draw controls as Duke prevailed to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC in the 2019 campaign.
