DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field program is proud to announce the addition of five student-athletes that will compete in sprinting events for the Blue Devils next season.
"We are very excited about the new additions to the sprints and hurdles," Assistant Coach
Mark Mueller said. "All of them are talented athletes with a lot of enthusiasm and energy. We are looking forward to developing their talents and their immediate contribution to what we are building here at Duke."
Joining the women's team is
Hailey Williams, a senior from Delta Junction, Alaska, who is finishing up at Delta Junction High School. Williams brings impressive PR times to Durham that include a 11.95 mark in the 100m. Her personal-best time of 24.05 seconds in the 200m placed her fifth at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 2019. Williams will become the first Alaska native on Duke's roster since 2003.
The Blue Devils will welcome graduate-transfer
Cha'Mia Rothwell to the program, a Durham native who spent four seasons competing at Dartmouth. Rothwell's resume with the Big Green includes back-to-back Ivy League Outstanding Female Field Performer honors at the 2017 and 2018 Heptagonal Championships. She set PR times in the 60m hurdles (8.20 seconds) and 200m (23.90 seconds) at the 2018 Ivy League Indoor Championships, winning gold and silver, respectively. She claimed gold once again in the indoor 60m hurdles this past season with a finish of 8.31 seconds. Rothwell attended high school at Durham Academy, where she was a three-time state champion in the 200m.
The men's sprint team will be boosted by
Alejandro Rodriguez, a native of McAllen, Texas, who competed at McAllen High School. Rodriguez set multiple PR's during the 2019 outdoor season, including a 48.49-second time in the 400m at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) regionals. That mark would have been the second-fastest among Duke runners in the 400m last season.
Another Texas native joining the Blue Devils next season is
Job Trahan. A senior at Houston Strake Jesuit High School, Trahan's personal-best time of 48.91 seconds in the 400m came during the 2019 outdoor season. He also contributed on relay squads that put up strong times that include a 3:10.56 finish in the 4x400m relay.
Rounding out the group is
Chong Wei Guan, a native of Singapore who is a two-time U20 national champion in the 110m hurdles. His PR time of 14.03 seconds makes him a U19 and U20 national record holder, and he comes to Durham with competition experience at the IAAF World U20 Championships in 2018 as well as the IAAF World U18 Championships in 2017.
