The Duke baseball program is set to look back at some of its memorable walk-off wins from over the years in a series titled "Walk-Off Wednesday". Let's take a look back at the Blue Devils' walk-off victory over North Carolina during the 2014 season.
In game two of the series with rival North Carolina, the Blue Devils found themselves in an extra-innings thriller with the potential to clinch the series against the 19
th-ranked team in the nation. A gritty performance throughout, Duke trailed 6-1 in the third and 8-6 in the seventh before rallying to send the game into extra innings at a rain-soaked Jack Coombs Field.
"We never really panicked," said redshirt senior Ryan Deitrich. "We were down big early but we knew all along we were going to come back. We just really focused on having good at-bats and taking it one pitch at a time."
Redshirt junior Chris Marconcini drew the one-out walk in the 12
th and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. North Carolina then issued back-to-back intentional walks to load the bases for Deitrih. The Collegeville, Pa., native proceeded to smoke the UNC reliever Spencer Trayner's 1-0 pitch past the outstretched glove of diving third baseman Alex Raburn to drive in the game-winning run and help Duke walk it off, 9-8.
"As a graduate transfer for the team, I hadn't been part of the rivalry, but I knew how much it meant to the guys who had been there for four years," Detrich added. "Watching them walk two seniors in front of me to load the bases, I knew I had my shot. Running out into right field and making my teammates chase me—that for me was the greatest moment in my Duke baseball career in the one year that I spent there and nothing will ever top it."
