DURHAM, N.C.—On this day, May 20, 2018
Justin Guterding became the NCAA's all-time leading goal scorer with three tallies to lead Duke to the NCAA semifinals with a 14-9 victory over Johns Hopkins. It marked Duke's ninth appearance in championship weekend since 2007 and Guterding's first as a player. The hat trick was his 12th in 16 games at that point.
Guterding enjoyed a record-breaking day against the Blue Devils as his third marker of the afternoon pushed his career total to 207, eclipsing the previous NCAA record of 206 set by former Duke standout Zack Greer. In addition, the goal marked Guterding's 104th point of 2018 to set the Duke single-season scoring record, bettering Jordan Wolf's 103-point campaign in 2014.
The native of Garden City, N.Y., went on to finish his career with 212 goals and 351 points – second to
Matt Danowski's 353 at Duke and sixth in NCAA history upon graduation. Guterding and Greer are the lone players in NCAA Division I history to score at least 200 goals, while Max Quinzani ranks third in NCAA history with 199.
Guterding owns the Duke mark for single-season points at 113, ranking tied for 10th in NCAA history and one of just 22 Division I players to reach the century mark in a season.
