Thank You, Jacki | Pam Bustin
It's hard to believe that Jacki Silar's retirement has arrived! It really does seem like it was just yesterday when I arrived at Duke and finally had the opportunity to work within Jacki's legendary leadership.
That was actually 10 years ago! Incredible. During these past 10 years, I have benefited from her passion for collegiate athletics, genuine dedication to the student-athletes (past and present), love for the sport of field hockey and our Duke program, and for guiding her coaches to create and provide the most comprehensive, successful, and healthy environment for our teams.
I knew plans of her eventual retirement loomed ahead…I just never expected it to actually happen! How could Jacki NOT be a part of college athletics and Duke?
Well, when Jacki packs her office collection of championship pictures, well-earned plaques and trophies, shuts the door to her office and leaves the parking lot, she will leave behind a legacy of hard work, millions of listening hours and an unconditional love for all who chose Duke.
She has inspired others to lead with their hearts and fully invest in the Duke journey – not to just show up for work and check the boxes on the administrator's to-do list. We have all learned that the Duke journey begins in the freshmen year or your date of hire…and lasts a lifetime.
When I became the Duke field hockey coach, I not only inherited my first Duke squad, but the hundreds of proud field hockey alumnae that adore and revere Coach Silar. I was welcomed with open arms and quickly became acquainted with this incredible group of Duke women. I can only hope the same from the players whom I have had the privilege to coach.
To say "thank you" just doesn't seem like enough. To know that I have had an administrator that has had my back, listened, and become a part of my team is unique and irreplaceable. I am fortunate to be a part of Jacki's Duke journey and have never taken for granted her thoughtful mentorship, clear leadership and the heartfelt relationships she has created with each of her colleagues…spanning over decades, sport programs and rank!
I will always be grateful to Jacki and will show my gratitude by carrying on the Jacki Silar effect: leadership in the spirit of integrity, passion and love. Thank you, Jacki – for all you have done and given. I wish all the best for you as you move on to the next phase of your great journey!
