DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke cross country and track & field teams are pleased to announce that
Daniel Goetz has been promoted from volunteer assistant coach to assistant coach for both programs, effective immediately.
"Dan has been a very loyal volunteer assistant for the past three years at Duke," cross country head coach and assistant track & field coach
Rhonda Riley said. "No one is more deserving of this position than Dan. He will be able to jump in right away and help bring the men's and women's programs together for the first time in Duke history. I'm looking forward to the year ahead and seeing the impact Dan will have with both squads."
Since joining the Blue Devils staff as a volunteer assistant in August of 2017, Goetz has worked closely with the women's cross country team. Over the past three seasons, the team went from finishing 10th at the NCAA Southeast Regional to third in 2018, with four individuals earning All-Southeast honors along the way. In his first two autumns in Durham, Goetz worked with
Michaela Reinhart, who was tabbed ACC Freshman of the Year in 2017 and picked up All-ACC status in her freshman and sophomore campaigns. In the offseason, he has served as assistant director of the Duke Cross Country Camp.
During the indoor and outdoor track seasons, Goetz has assisted with all women's distance events. He has been directly involved with numerous individual achievements and accolades by Blue Devil runners, including
Monica Herber qualifying for the final round of the 10,000m at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Three Duke distance runners have earned All-ACC status over the past three seasons, with the most recent being Reinhart claiming a silver medal in the 3,000m at the 2020 ACC Indoor Championship.
Goetz graduated from Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in Exercise and Health Science.
Additionally, the track & field program's volunteer assistant staff will include three returning members and two new additions. Returning to the Blue Devils will be
Maddy Price,
Michael Terwilliger and
Felicia Majors, while
Sarah Glidden and Duke alum
Sean-Patrick Oswald are set to join for the upcoming season.
