DURHAM, N.C. – For the first time in program history, Duke softball will open the 2021 season ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll while receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll, as announced by the organizations on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils finished the 2020 campaign with a program-best 23-4 record before the season was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Duke received votes in the final USA Today/NFCA DI Coaches Poll while earning its first national ranking at No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll.
Duke was one of three ACC schools slotted in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 with No. 12 Florida State and No. 15 Virginia Tech while Clemson (9) and Notre Dame (1) received vote(s). As for the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25, Florida ranked 12th while Virginia Tech entered at No. 16. The Blue Devils received 30 votes, followed by Notre Dame (5) and NC State (4) to round out the league.
Duke returns 19 of its 20 players from last year's roster with three seniors returning and the addition of six freshmen. Head coach
Marissa Young and her team will begin the season at the Tiger Classic, hosted by LSU at Tiger Park Feb. 12-14. The Blue Devils will face Central Arkansas, No. 5 LSU, McNeese and Kansas.
