Blue Devils Breeze Past Camels in Homer Opener, 7-0

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's tennis notched its first dual match victory in 2021 as the Blue Devils defeated Campbell, 7-0, on Friday evening in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils didn't drop a single set en route to their first win of the season (1-2) while the Camels fell in their season-opening contest (0-1).

Andrew Zhang and Edu Güell quickly handled their opponents on court two, picking up a 6-2 win to open doubles action. Duke clinched the doubles point on court three as Michael Heller and Samuel Rubell garnered another 6-2 victory. Doubles play on court one for No. 55 Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns went unfinished at 4-4.

After earning its first doubles decision of 2021, Duke carried momentum into singles action with Andrew Dale blanking his opponent (6-0, 6-0) to finish first on court five. Not long after, Faris Khan cruised to a 6-0 set one win before taking the match, winning 6-4 in the second. The two singles wins are the first for the freshmen's dual careers.

Zhang clinched the match at 4-0 for the Blue Devils with a 6-1, 6-3 feat on court three for his second singles win of the dual season. Nearly a minute later, Güell made it 5-0 for Duke as he recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win on court two. Â

Johns outlasted his opponent in a first-set tiebreak (7-6 [1]) before picking up a 6-3 win in set two on Duke's top court. With the last match running on court four, Rubell secured the Blue Devils' 7-0 win in tiebreaking fashion (6-3, 7-6 [6]).

Duke is back in Sheffield on Sunday as the Blue Devils host UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m.
