FURMAN, S.C. – The No. 18 Duke men's soccer team (10-3-0, 4-2-0 ACC) got back in the win column on Tuesday night, defeating Furman (3-8-1, 2-2-0 SoCon), 3-2.
Â
The Blue Devils saw goals from sophomore
Peter Stroud, sophomore
Miguel Ramirez and freshman
Shakur Mohammed. Freshmen
Jai Bean and
Felix Barajas each added assists on Ramirez's goal, while senior
Eliot Hamill earned his eighth win, making four saves in the win.
Â
"[I liked] Our team being pragmatic and understanding the times of the game, making sure that we did enough to get ourselves in the lead and come back from an equalizing goal that was kind of against the run of play and keeping our poise," said Head Coach
John Kerr. "It's not easy, they are a good team, they are a lot better than their record and Doug Allison does a great job with his group. They are going to be difficult to beat down the stretch."
Â
The game began with limited scoring attempts, as the Blue Devils limited the Paladins to just one shot through the first 30 minutes. Duke didn't garner any major chances until Bean got loose in Furman box and drew a foul, giving the Blue Devils its sixth penalty kick drawn this season.
Â
Stroud would take the kick for the Blue Devils and for the second straight game, he buried it to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. At the half, the Blue Devils held the edge on shots at 7-3 but expanded the offensive attack in the second half.
Â
Sophomore
Luke Thomas nearly had goal just two minutes into the second half, pushing a ball just wide right. One minute later, sophomore
Thorleifur Ulfarsson had his shot stopped by Furman goalkeeper Ben Roberts.
Â
However, Furman was able to secure a late tiebreaker, despite several strong saves by Hamill. The Paladins' Jack Raine was able to trickle a shot past Hamill, but the Blue Devils were quick to respond just one minute later.
Â
Attacking right off the kickoff, Barajas was able to steal the ball and possess it into Furman's third. Barajas fed Bean, who delivered a cross into the Furman box. The ball made it past a streaking
Scotty Taylor, but found wide open Ramirez, who made no mistake and gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Blue Devils continued to pepper the Furman goalkeeper, forcing Roberts to make several saves. The Furman defense finally sprung a leak when Mohammed was able to dribble his way through the defense and tuck a shot into the back of the net to extend the lead to 3-1.
Â
Furman didn't give up and got a stroke of luck just 28 seconds later, with a Duke handball in their own box. Raine was able to pot the penalty kick to shave the deficit to one but was unable to get any more chances. A late attempt at a brace from Mohammed rang off the right post but was more than enough to secure the victory.
Â
With the win, the Blue Devils have reached double figures in total wins for the first time since 2018 (11).
Â
The Blue Devils will continue the two-game road swing, traveling to South Bend, Ind., to face off against No. 20 Notre Dame. The Blue Devils will play at 7 p.m. on Friday on ACC Network Extra.
