NEWTON, Mass. β Duke freshman
Logan Clouser scored her team-leading fifth goal, but a pair of second-half scores from 13th-ranked Boston College was too much for the No. 24 Blue Devils as they fell 3-1 in the ACC field hockey regular season finale Friday evening.
The game was wide open for 60 minutes with the two teams combining for 29 shots and 14 penalty corners. Boston College (10-5, 3-3) had a narrow 16-13 edge in shots, including 7-4 in the second half, but Duke won the corner battle, 8-6.
The Blue Devils started the game on the front foot with rookie
Logan Clouser testing Boston College goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy immediately. Kennedy denied Clouser's shot from the right side, but Duke won a penalty corner on the ensuing scrum inside the circle.
Duke (5-10, 0-6) executed the resulting penalty corner to perfection as
Lily Posternak inserted the ball to
Lexi Davidson who stopped it for
Eva Nunnink. The Netherlands native then deceptively slipped a pass to Posternak positioned on the left post. A wide-open Posternak tapped it back across the front of the cage where Clouser tipped it in for her fifth goal of the season.
Clouser's goal marked the sixth time in the past seven games the freshman forward registered at least a point in a game.
Duke goalkeeper
Piper Hampsch and the Duke backfield played well over the next 10 minutes with Hampsch collecting a pair of stops, including one on a penalty corner, to keep the Eagles off the board.
However, Boston College used every second of the quarter and tied the game with 0.6 seconds remaining with a backhand shot by Milagros Arteta.
The second quarter featured more back-and-forth action with the two teams taking four shots apiece. Duke also won four penalty corners but was unable to find the cage again as the two teams headed into the break tied, 1-1.
The Blue Devils had arguably the best look of the quarter in the waning minutes as it appeared Duke might have scored, but a penalty corner was awarded first.
The Eagles and Blue Devils continued to work end-to-end in the third quarter, but it was Boston College capitalizing on one of its five shots to take a 2-1 lead. Sarah Johnson scored the goal for the Eagles.
Alayna Burns nearly tied the game for Duke in the waning minutes of the quarter as she received a long pass inside the circle and fired a shot on cage. Kennedy made the stop, and her backfield players did well to get the ball out of danger and keep the 2-1 lead after 45 minutes.
Boston College extended its lead to 3-1 midway through the fourth quarter. An aerial pass forced Hampsch to come out of the goal and Arteta put it past Hampsch where Nell Webber pushed it over the line for her first score of the year.
Hampsch finished the night with six saves, while Kennedy had three.
The Blue Devils close regular season play Sunday, Oct. 24 at Boston University. First hit is set for 12 p.m., on ESPN+.
