Duke Takes Two of Three at Boilermaker Duals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Duke wrestling program (2-1) opened its 2021-22 duals campaign on a high note, defeating Bellarmine (1-7) and Northern Illinois (2-3), but falling to No. 20 Purdue (6-0) on Sunday at the Boilermaker Duals in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Blue Devils opened the day against Bellarmine, with the Blue Devils cruising to a 35-10 win over the Knights. The first win of the day came from redshirt sophomore Drake Doolittle in a 9-2 decision over Max Dansereau and set in motion a strong team effort. Duke would see tremendous success at higher weights, with redshirt seniors No. 13 Josh Finesilver, No. 7 Matt Finesilver and Kaden Russell and junior Wade Unger earning wins via fall.

Similar results followed against Northern Illinois, as the Blue Devils earned a 25-17 decision over the Huskies. The redshirt senior trio improved to 2-0 on the day, with Matt Finesilver winning his first ranked matchup of the season in a 4-0 decision over No. 28 Mason Kauffman. Up five entering the final matchup, junior Jonah Niesenbaum secured a 3-2 decision for his second win of the day and gave Duke the victory.

While unable to knock off the host Purdue, the Finesilver's and Niesenbaum secured 3-0 days with wins over the Boilermakers. Matt Finesilver beat his second straight ranked opponent, downing No. 20 Gerrit Nijenhuis by fall 3:47 in the match. With the win, Finesilver improves to 10-0 on the season. Niesenbaum earned a win by fall to seal a tremendous weekend, as the Allentown, Pa., native improves to 9-2 this season.

The Blue Devils will return to action on December 4, when they travel to College Park, Md., to face Maryland and Drexel. Duke has four dual matches remaining until its home opener on Dec. 19 against The Citadel and Bloomsburg.
