FACING MIAMI IN NOVEMBER
Saturday's contest will mark the eighth time the Blue Devils and Hurricanes have battled in the month of November under head coach David Cutcliffe. Of the other six meetings, two were played in September, three in October and one in December. As a program, Duke has faced off against Miami three times in September, seven times in October, seven times in November and one time in December.
BOBO BIG UNDER PRESSURE
Senior wide receiver Jake Bobo has become Duke's top target for extending drives. The North Andover, Mass., native had 32 catches in 2020, with 22 of those going for a first down. Bobo has continued that trend in Duke's 11 games of 2021. Forty of his 71 receptions have earned a first down.
Of his 71 receptions on the year:
** 40 have earned a first down
** Four have gone for nine yards
** 26 have gone for eight-or-less yards
** One went for 11 but missed a first down due to a false start on previous play
Impressively, during Duke's last outing against Louisville, seven of Bobo's nine receptions went for a first down, including  six for double-digit yardage. He tallied 102 receiving yards in the game for his third 100 yard receiving game. He became just the 12th Blue Devil in program history to record three games of 100-plus receiving yards in a single season. Bobo currently leads the Blue Devils with 762 receiving yards on 71 catches. His 6.45 receptions per game rank fifth in the ACC, while his receiving yards are eighth in the league.Â
DYNAMIC DUO
Duke is one of three ACC schools with multiple players with 675-plus receiving yards. Jake Bobo (762) and Jalon Calhoun(685) join Virginia's Dontayvion Wicks (1,148) and Keytaon Thompson (899) as well as Wake Forest's A.T. Perry (1,031) and Jaquarii Roberson (953).
The pair become the 13th duo to achieve 600-plus receiving yards in the same season. They are the first twosome since T.J. Rahming (811) and Johnathan Lloyd (604) did so in 2018.
THE RISE OF RILEY
At the start of preseason camp freshman quarterback Riley Leonardwas Duke's fourth string quarterback. Since then, the rookie has slowly moved his way up the depth chart. Over the Blue Devils' last five games, the Fairhope, Ala., native saw 155 snaps under center, including his first career start against Virginia Tech. In his six career games played, Leonard has gone 36-of-60 (.600) passing for 372 yards with one interception and one touchdown. He has also utilized his feet, racking up 188 yards on 46 carries with two rushing scores.
During Duke's last outing against Louisville, Leonard finished the game a perfect 13-of-13 passing for 99 yards and scampered for 70 yards on seven rushes with a season-long 35-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter.
LEADER OF THE RUN GAME
Senior Mataeo Durant has accumulated 1,173 rushing yards on 233 attempts with nine touchdowns in Duke's 11 games. Nationally, the Plum Branch, S.C., native is tied for eighth in rushing attempts, 11th in rushing yards and 12th in rushing yards per game (106.6).
Durant has rushed for 50+ yards in 20 career games, topped the 100-yard plateau on the ground 10 times and has 23 rushing attempts of 20-plus yards, including a career-long 64-yard TD jaunt versus Florida State in 2020. He sits fourth on Duke's career rushing chart with 2,494 yards.
FIERCE FRYE
While Duke had to rebuild much of its defensive line, one factor that remained the same was veteran Ben Frye. AÂ year ago, Frye was the Blue Devils' starting defensive tackle but shifted to defensive end during the offseason.
On his career ledger, Frye has 80 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and two quarterback pressures. Frye holds two of Duke's fumble recoveries on the year, and they happened in the same contest against Northwestern. He became the first Blue Devil to recover two fumbles in the same game since Ben Humphreys did so at Miami on Nov. 3, 2018. Frye added a career-best seven tackles during Duke's outing against Georgia Tech ... he has registered four-plus tackles in six of the Blue Devils' 11 contests.
The Dublin, Ohio, native is also a dual-sport athlete at Duke, competing as a member of the wrestling program.
Oben (5.0), Carter (4.5), Heyward (3.0), Frye (2.0), Â Peebles (2.0) and all have multiple sacks on the year and six players have double-digit sack yardage on the season.
FORCING PRESSURE
Redshirt sophomore DeWayne Carter is currently tied for sixth in the nation with 13 others with four forced fumbles on the year. The Blue Devils have now had a player register three-plus caused fumbles in a single season in five of the last 10 years. DeVon Edwards led the group during that stretch with five in 2014.Â
BLOCK PARTY
Sophomore Isaiah Fisher-Smith has an impressive three career blocked punts to his name, including one during Duke's last outing against Louisville. He's also added a recovery of a blocked punt during Duke's outing against Charlotte in 2020.
