Duke Claims Seven-of-Eight Singles Matches to Begin Wake Forest Invite

DURHAM – Duke men's tennis produced a strong showing during the opening day of the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday.

The eight Blue Devils competing this weekend combined to recorded seven-of-eight victories in singles action and four wins in doubles play to kick off the three-day event.

In the A1 Draw, Arturo Kam defeated Campbell's Damien Nezar 7-6 (4), 6-3 and Andrew Dale bested Diogo Marques of Stetson 6-3, 6-3. Edu Güell and Connor Krug also recorded victories after 6-4, 6-1 and 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 7-5 wins over N.C. State's Joseph Wayand and Georgia Southern's Pol Del Castillo, respectively.

Niroop Vallabhaneni, Jake Krug and Faris Khan each registered a win in the A2 Draw to add to Duke's impressive first day. Vallabhaneni beat Elon's Daniel Martin 7-6 (5), 6-4, while J. Krug recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alan Kam of Princeton. Khan closed out with the Blue Devils' final singles win after a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Princeton's Filippos Astreinidis.
In doubles action, Khan and Vallabhaneni advanced to the semifinals of the A2 Draw following 6-2 and 6-3 wins over Alan Kam and Bill Duo of Princeton and Thomas Brown and Abhimanyu Vannemreddy of Charlotte, respectively.Â
Güell and Kam as well as C. Krug and J. Krug both won their quarterfinal doubles match but fell in the semifinals.Â
Play continues Saturday at Wake Forest University, beginning at 9 a.m.
