DURHAM – Duke track & field and cross country will welcome three graduate transfers to the program for the 2022-23 campaign. The trio features a pair of throws' athletes as well as one distance runner, increasing the incoming 2022 class to 11 members.
Robbie Otal,
Ashlyn Ramos and
Ilhame Tamrouti comprise the group of signees. The group joins incoming freshmen
Nick Falk,
Dalia Frias,
Julia Jackson,
Jeremy Kain,
Gianna Locci,
Allison Neiders,
Falon Spearman and
Lauren Tolbert.
"I'm excited to add these highly talented throwers to Duke's 2022 recruiting class," assistant track and field coach
Angelo Posillico said. "As graduate students they will come in with a high level of maturity and past collegiate success that will benefit our entire team. I expect each of them to make an immediate impact and to elevate the competitive excellence of our throws program."
A native of Oak Park, Calif., Otal will join the Blue Devils following his senior season at Princeton. Otal ranks second all-time on the discus list in the Princeton record book, as his throw at the Turkey Toss Meet measured 59.86m (196-4 feet). A two-time (2018, 2019) NCAA Regional qualifier, Ivy League runner-up and All-Ivy League Second Team honoree in the outdoor discus, Otal qualified for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials after throwing 60.02m at the Chula Vista Training Center meet but was unable to compete in the event due to injury.
Checking in as the lone runner of the group, Ramos will bring an accomplished distance running pedigree to Duke. A three-time All-Patriot League First Team selection in cross country and two-time All-Regional honoree, Ramos won the Patriot League cross country individual title in the spring of 2021. Most recently, she finished as runner-up (21:09.1) at the Patriot League Championships in October before clocking 20:33.9 to take 14th place at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Ramos received an at-large bid to the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships, becoming just the second runner in Bucknell history to qualify twice for the event and first Bison to qualify twice individually.
"We are thrilled to have Ashlyn joining us next year as she pursues her graduate degree," said head cross country coach
Angela Reckart. "She brings a wealth of experience to the team, having qualified individually for the NCAA Cross Country Championships twice in her career and excelling on the track in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with her to help her achieve some lofty individual and team goals with the Blue Devils."
The Sammamish, Wash., native has also excelled on the track as she owns the top overall 10,000m mark, along with the second-best 5,000m time in program history. Ramos collected the program's 10,000m record at the 2021 Virginia Challenge, where her PR of 34:04.76 crushed the previous best by just over 20 seconds, before grabbing Bucknell's No. 2 5,000m spot at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships later that May with a time of 16:23.75 to take the silver medal. She also took first in the 10,000m race (35:37.52) at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, finished 37th in the 2021 NCAA East Preliminaries at 35:44.50 and holds a PR of 16:16 in the 5000m.
Hailing from Kampen, Netherlands, Tamrouti is set to join the Blue Devils after she wraps up her undergraduate tenure at Loyola Chicago, where she's experienced tremendous success in the javelin. A two-time Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) outdoor champion (2019, 2021) and two-time All-MVC selection (2019, 2021) in the javelin, Tamrouti set the all-time Rambler record and personal best in the javelin throw following her toss of 166-06 feet (50.74m) at the 2021 NCAA West Preliminaries. Tamrouti's performance punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships and made her just the second female field athlete in program history to qualify for the event.
The 2019 MVC Outdoor Freshman of the Year achieved 2021 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Outdoor All-America honorable mention status to become just the fourth female All-American in program history. As a sophomore, Tamrouti competed in the high jump during the indoor season – her clearance of 5-01.25 feet (1.56m), which she posted at the Cardinal Opener, was a PR and ranks seventh all-time in program history. She is a two-time USTFCCA All-Academic Team selection and was twice named an MVC Women's Scholar Athlete.
