DURHAM, N.C.—Duke outshot Charlotte 14-9 and had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks over the course of 110 minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net in a scoreless draw with the 49ers to kick off the spring portion of the 2020-21 men's soccer season. The Blue Devils hit the cross bar and were a bit unlucky not to come away with the win.
The Blue Devils move to 2-6-1 overall, while Charlotte starts the season off 0-0-1. It was the 49ers' first game since November of 2019. The 49ers were ranked in the top 25 in two of the preseason national polls.
Duke junior goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill made his debut in net, earning the shutout with five saves. It was the first game for the Blue Devils with a new face in goal since the fall of 2017.
The first half was a bit flat for both teams in terms of action in the attacking third. Charlotte managed three shots and Duke two, but none were quality looks at goal.
The Blue Devils went into the locker room, regrouped and came out in the second stanza on the front foot. Duke was the more dynamic team all over the field and started to generate good opportunities on frame.
Rookie
Peter Stroud was excellent for the Blue Devils in the middle of the field, helping Duke create offense. He was everywhere for the Blue Devils and constantly caused fits for the 49ers defense.
Duke's best chance of the night came off the foot of junior midfielder
Conor Kelly in the 64th minute. After the ball popped out to him on top of the penalty box, Kelly sent a screamer off the crossbar, leaving the 49ers thankful to remain tied.
Just over a minute later, rookie striker
Thorleifur Ulfarsson had a fantastic strike saved by Daniel Kuzemka. With all momentum in their favor, the Blue Devils continued to put Charlotte on its heels. This time it was Kelly again being in the right spot as Ulfarsson slotted a ball back across the goal, but Kelly's touch missed wide right.
Duke had a span of four consecutive corner kicks in the 15-minute stretch in the offensive third but couldn't convert.
Charlotte, weathering the storm for much of the period, had a couple of good looks late in the game, only to be stymied by Hamill as the teams headed into overtime.
Both overtime sessions were entertaining with full-field action. Charlotte had the edge in play in the first 10 minutes, but steady defense from Duke forced a second overtime. The Blue Devils had two shots in the final 10 minutes, including a shot from Ulfarsson with 11 seconds left that nearly snuck past a diving Kuzemka.
Duke returns home to host Kentucky next Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
