NEW YORK – Former Duke men's basketball stars
Kyrie Irving,
Jayson Tatum and
Zion Williamson have been selected to the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, while former Blue Devil and current Utah Jazz head coach
Quin Snyder was named the head coach for Team LeBron. Irving is now a seven-time All-Star, while Tatum is playing in his second consecutive game and Williamson is making his debut.
Williamson, 20, is the fourth youngest player in NBA history to earn an All-Star Game nod behind Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Magic Johnson. He becomes the 11th former Blue Devil to participate in the event and Duke has earned 29 all-time NBA All-Star selections since 1969. The 70th NBA All-Star Game will be played Sunday, March 7 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta and televised by TNT as part of NBA All-Star 2021, which will take place on one night.
In 29 games so far this season, Williamson is averaging 25.1 points (14th in NBA), 6.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 32.8 minutes per contest. Williamson's field goal percentage (.616) is ranked fifth in the NBA, and the Duke product holds the highest field goal percentage among the league's top 71 ranked scorers.
Irving, 28, selected as a starter, is averaging 27.4 points, 5.8 assists and 4.7 rebounds for the resurgent Brooklyn Nets, who are 21-12 and in second place in the East behind Philadelphia.
At age 22, Tatum is the youngest player in Celtics' franchise history to receive multiple All-Star bids. He has played far beyond his years this season, averaging career-highs in points (26.1 PPG) rebounds (7.1 RPG), and assists (4.6 APG), while shooting 44.8 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from 3-point range, and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Irving is among the pool 10 starters, while Tatum and Williamson are among the reserves. Team captains Kevin Durant and LeBron James will draft their teams, regardless of conference affliation. Snyder will coach the James' squad.
Duke has had at least one NBA All-Star in five consecutive years, in nine of the last 10 years and in 12 of the last 16.
