DURHAM, N.C. – After guiding the Duke women's soccer team to a national championship game appearance for the second time in program history, head coach
Robbie Church was named the 2011 Soccer America National Coach of the Year.
In his 11th season at the helm, Church helped a Blue Devil squad that was unranked in the preseason NSCAA poll reach the program's first NCAA College Cup since 1992. Duke would fall in the championship match to top-ranked Stanford, 1-0, but the team registered a school-record 22 victories on the year and won the ACC regular season title after posting a program-best eight league wins.
After winning 11 matches in 2010, Church's group doubled that total with a final record of 22-4-1 in 2011. Duke became just the third team in ACC history to reach the 20-win mark. For his efforts, Church was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.
All of this was accomplished with a starting lineup of one freshman, five sophomores and five juniors. Two Blue Devils earned Soccer America recognition in addition to Church, including sophomore
Natasha Anasi, who was named to the Soccer America MVP First Team after starting all 27 matches as a midfielder and defender.
Kelly Cobb was tapped to the All-Freshman First Team.
Over his first 11 seasons at Duke, Church led the Blue Devils to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and 215 victories. He became the second Duke women's soccer coach to be named National Coach of the Year, as
Bill Hempen earned the NSCAA honor in 1992. Following the historic 2011 campaign, Church was also named NSCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year and FieldTurf NCAA Division I Coach of the Year.
