ATLANTA, Ga. – The sixth-ranked Duke women's tennis team saw its seven-match winning streak come to a close Friday evening in Atlanta, Ga., as the Blue Devils dropped a, 5-2, decision at 13th-ranked Georgia Tech at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
With the loss, Duke fell to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 11-6, 4-2.
For the first time since 2020, the Blue Devils fell behind, 1-0, as Georgia Tech claimed the doubles point. It snapped a 14-match streak of Duke winning the doubles point.
Duke jumped out to a quick start winning the first game on all three courts and on court three
Kelly Chen and
Georgia Drummy stormed out to a 4-0 advantage. Chen and Drummy would take the match, 6-2, over Monika Dedaj and Sophia Sassoli.
After leading 3-2 early,
Chloe Beck and
Karolina Berankova would go down, 3-4, but responded by evening the match against Gia Cohen and Ava Hrastar, 4-4. Cohen and Hrastar closed the contest by winning the next two games and won, 6-4.
The doubles point came down to court one between Duke's
Margaryta Bilokin and
Meible Chi versus the Yellow Jacket's fifth-ranked tandem of Kenya Jones and Victoria Flores. Bilokin and Chi did not trail early leading 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 5-3, but Georgia Tech came back to even the match, 6-6, sending it to a tiebreaker. Jones and Flores took the match with a 7-3 tiebreaking win.
Duke came out in singles and was able to even the score, 1-1, as 111th-ranked Chi took down Rosie Garcia Gross, 6-3, 6-2, on court four. It marked the eighth straight victory for Chi to improve to 13-2 on the season. A product of Weston, Fla., Chi moved to 125-36 all-time in singles to move into a tie for fifth on Duke's wins list along with Susan Sabo (125-48).
Georgia Tech regained the lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court five as Carol Lee defeated Bilokin.
On court six, Berankova was involved in a battle with Mahak Jain. The Blue Devil freshman led, 4-3, in the first set, but Jain came back to take the set, 6-4. Berankova led 6-5 late in the second, but eventually fell, 7-6 (7-5), in a tiebreaker to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead.
Eighth-ranked Chen tried to make a comeback on court one after dropping the first set, 6-3, to 13th-ranked Jones as she won the second set, 6-3, but she got down 2-5 in the third and eventually fell, 4-6, to clinch the victory for Georgia Tech.
Seeing action on court three for the second time this season, Drummy won the first set against Hrastar, 6-3, but fell, 4-6, in the second set. After falling behind, 3-5, in the third set, Drummy stormed back to win four straight games to take the set, 7-5. Drummy, who is from Dublin, Ireland, collected her 11th singles win of the season.
Georgia Tech closed the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win on court two as 56th-ranked Flores defeated 29th-ranked Beck for the 5-2 final score.
Out of 11 matches on the season, Duke has dropped only two contests, both coming on the road at Georgia Tech.
Duke will close the weekend with a road match at Clemson Sunday, March 14 at 12 p.m.
