DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 12 Duke field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 13 Wake Forest on Friday at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper
Piper Hampsch made three saves for the Blue Devils (3-8, 1-1 ACC), but the offense was held in check throughout the first half and found itself down two goals early on.
The Demon Deacons (5-9, 2-1 ACC) got the scoring started just 4:50 into the game and doubled its lead nearly seven minutes later off a penalty corner. Duke had an opportunity to get one back three minutes into the second quarter, but freshman
Alayna Burns' shot was turned away by Tori Glaister in the cage for Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons made it 3-0 with another tally off a penalty corner five minutes into the second half, but the Blue Devils got on the board with 6:15 remaining in the game. Senior
Lily Posternak collected the rebound off an
Eva Nunnick shot and chipped it over Glaister for her second goal of the season.
Wake Forest tallied the final goal of the contest in the 57th minute for a 4-1 win. Sophomore
Charlotte Johnson made her season debut, entering in the final minutes of the contest and making two saves – the first of her career.
Duke outshot Wake Forest, 14-12, and Nunnink led the Blue Devils with four shots while freshman
Darcy Bourne was closely behind with three.
