LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Duke got back in the win column Sunday afternoon after it defeated Louisville, 4-1, at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
Despite dropping their first ACC contest of the year on Friday at Notre Dame, the Blue Devils bounced back for their third conference win to shift them to 3-1 in league play. Overall Duke sits at 7-5, while Louisville dips to 5-6 on the season.
Â
Louisville started doubles action with a 6-1 win on court two after Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez defeated
Edu Güell and
Luca Keist. The Blue Devils didn't waver though as No. 55
Sean Sculley and
Garrett Johns earned a 6-3 victory on the top court to knot everything up at 1-1. A few minutes later,
Samuel Rubell and
Andrew Zhang clinched the doubles point for Duke on court three when they recorded a thrilling 7-6 (11) tiebreak win.
The Blue Devils used that 1-0 advantage and turned it into a 3-0 edge after
Faris Khan and Keist both registered wins to kick off singles action. Khan was the first to finish following his 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alex Wesbrooks on court six. Keist then defeated David Mizrahi on court five thanks to a 6-2 win in the opening set and a 7-5 victory in the second.
Â
The home side earned their lone point of the match on court three when Hernandez beat Güell 6-1, 7-5. Fortunately for Duke, Zhang secured the overall win after he bested Josh Howard-Tripp 7-5, 6-1 on court four.
Â
Johns' match against No. 71 Chen on the top court and Sculley's match versus Fabien Salle on court two went unfinished. Johns won his first set 6-4 but was trailing 5-4 when his match was halted. Sculley dropped his opening set 6-4 and was down 5-4 when his match ceased.
After back-to-back road weekends, Duke finally makes its return to Durham next Sunday when it welcomes Boston College for what it hopes is its outdoor opener. That match is slated for noon at Ambler Tennis Stadium. Location is always subject to change based on weather. Live stats and live video will be available for Sunday's contest.
Â
As a reminder, Duke University will begin the spring sport season without spectators at home events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Contests played on Duke's campus will only include game management personnel and broadcast media.
